Trialblazer Engine Blew!

A friend of mine called me monday, his wife was driving their 02' Trailblazer to work that morning and it just shut down at a stop sign, She went to restart it and it made a growling sound when it turned over. Called the dealer, towtruck sent out to pick it up. Dealer checked it over, did a compression test, one cylinder dead. Engine junk with only 30K on it! New engine is on it's way. Dealer said it was the 4th Trailblazer/Envoy they have seen this happen too. This got me concerned. My wife and I have an 02 Trailblazer with 7K on it. Is this engine reliable? What have you all heard???

That is the first major problem that i have heard of the IL-6 engine

 

That would be a screwed up deal if your engine blew at like 37k and the dealer did not stand behind it

Now I'm getting nervous. My wife has 39k on hers. No extended warranty either. I always thought inline 6's were inherently long lasting. Luckily I got a free used motor for a backup if I need it.

That is the problem with the engine I have heard of, probably just a bad bunch. I would not be very worried.

There were isolated problems with the piston sleeves, I work at a dealer and we were using dye and UV light to check for cracks when they came in. They kinda swept it under the rug now and it isn't a problem on the 03's. GM won't give you any problem and will replace the engine. Good luck.

Thanks for the replys. I'll keep you posted when I here the details of what broke in the engine. They're supposed to get it back tomorrow. I'm not that worried, but it makes yout start thinking. They like their TB, but have had some problems with it.

I got a letter from GM extending the engine warranty to 100k miles.

03 Trailblazer

So far so good.

Glad to hear it isn't a prob on the 03 models. My sister just bought an 03 Trailblazer a few weeks ago and she does not know alot about engines, to say the least. Man it is niiiiiiiiiiiiiice!

All I know is that I'm driving an 03 now while the Dealer replaces my heads on my 02 Venture. It is a free ride for me and that Trailblazer is nice. Plenty of get up and go and smooth ride as well as handles really well too.

My father-in-law has an 03 trailblazer. Glad to see he shouldn't have any problems with it. Because if he did, he would sh*t a miata.

I bought a 2002 Trailblazer LS newand after I got 13000 miles on it I started having hesitation problems. I took it to the delaer 5 times trying to get it fixed they even flew some engineer wieinies out from GM headquarters who could't figure it out. They tried to say there was carbon on the back side of the intake valve causing the fuel spray to not be right. The delaership wanted to pull the head off and inspect it and I would not let them. I told them if they took the head off it was their Trailblazer. They tried programming it twice. The acclerator input and throttle position sesor matched but the fuel flow didn't. It would drop 300 rpms at idle when you lightly pushed the accelerator especially in a stop and go enviroment. It would occasionally stall. GM would not honor the lemon law on it. They had it 5 times over 55 days in the first year for this problem. They even had it for an entire month at one shot because I told them if they couldn't fix it I didn't want it back. The delaer made me a deal after threatening media coverage and being black listed from all base personel stationed here. He bought my 02 back for retail and I bought an 03 EXT Tralblazer LT with the 5.3 I was scared the bugs had not been worked out of the I6. He knocked $3,000 off the new one I still ended up with $15 a month more on my payment at 0% the 02 was at 5.9% and another 5 year loan. So after having it a year I lost at least $5,000 on the deal. I really like the 5.3 it is strong. The I6 was good on power but I couldn't stand the hesitation. They had 5 or 6 Trailblazers/ Envoys doing this also while I was fussing over mine.

I work PT at a full line Gm dealership and there's almost always a Trailblazer/Envoy/Bravada in the shop with the engine out of it.

ONLY if they are engineered correctly. Hopyfully, we won't find out in a few years GM installed a sub standard part that makes the average life around 100K.
