a/c on the blink!

d**n, what a time for the a/c to go out. It was 97 yesterday afternoon in San Antonio, and the a/c craps the bed. My 2003 with 13k on the odometer already having a/c problems? Anyway it happened all of a sudden, while I was motoring down the highway, the a/c just kicks off. I couldn't get it going again for anything.

This morning when I start off to work, the a/c is working like a champ! What gives? This baby is going to the shop tomorrow morning!

Is anyone else had this problem?

Hey there. I had the exact same problem. I was driving down the interstate and the darn A/C just stops blowing cold. It was blowing about 85 degree air. Turned it off, waited about 20 minutes and it was cold again. I've got an appointment with the dealer tomorrow. Hopefully I can post what the problem was. Unless the dealership blows me off.

Do you have the 6.0?

There's a TSB for the 6.0:

01-01-39-004A - Add additional electric cooling fan to 6.0l trucks.

Ok, here is the deal. I took the truck to the dealer Friday afternoon. As soon as I told the service manager what the symptoms were, he knew what the problem was. He told me that there is a switch on top of the engine which cycles the compressor. This switch is on all GM V-8 engines with A/C. The switch is faulty and normally goes out between 5-10k miles. My truck was at 13,300. GM has not released a replacement switch yet, but it is due any day. For now they put a new(bad) switch in, for another 5-10k I guess. He reiterated that this switch is bad on ALL GM V-8 engines with a/c.

That's the A/C cyling switch, common failing item.

This switches' funtions is to call for the compressor when it sees 15-18 psi in the low side of the system, anything below this the compressor won't engage, theoretically saving the system since the compressor

also distributes oil through the system.
