Quick 2007 Silverado "Service 4x4" Question

Hello all. I know this is a common issue, but I cant pinpoint what is going on with this one. I have owned a 2000 Silverado, and a 2005 Suburban. The "Service 4x4" light came on both at one time or another. It always turned out to be the selector switch. on the 2000 I replaced it once at about 100k miles and sold it at 240k miles. The 2005 Suburban, had to change it 3 times in 50k. Anyway, I have a 2007 Silverado with 99k on it. This morning I got the "Service 4x4" DIC light on, and selector switch was lit, but would not select. I got to work, and after an hour started it, and now it works. This is the third time this has happened. It seems to happen when it's really cold out here in wonderful Wisconsin. What could be the problem? Thanks for the help guys and gals.

If there's a service 4x4 code, it can be scanned to start. The encoder sensor on the transfer case is another common issue.
