You know you are OLD when...

I guess my old teen past has come back to haunt me. Waaay back in the late 60s, while ALL of us were cruising on Palmer Highway in Texas City near Galveston Island, we would pull over in a parking lot and talk-talk-talk, then take off again and cruise.

Then these beautiful trucks and hot rods would cruise on by, Corvettes, Hemis, 428 Cobra Jets, and always, ALWAYS, old geezers would step out of these dream rigs and we would all but boo them.

Fast forward a few decades:

Well, the other day, I drove in the Wal-Mart parking lot for just simple shopping. Wasn't thinking about much of anything. I pulled in the lot, I stopped. I opened my truck's door and got out.

And here is what I heard....: "IT'S AN OLD MAN! DANG!!!! HOW COME THAT OLD GUY IS DRIVING THAT TRUCK!!!! DANG!!!" and these high schoolers continued their way, doing their thing.

Well, i was floored by all of this. I didn't know whether to take it as a compliment or as an insult. Admittedly, I just installed the Carriage Works billet grille, and some flairs. A couple of months before, I installed the Pacer roof cab lights. But, basically, that is it. Heck, the truck isn't even lifted, and the torsion bars aren't cranked up.

Dang, I ain't THAT old! I guess the past has a way of doing its revenge.

I get that kind of stuff every now and then from the "young-en's" at work, although I'm just 34. They think it's funny that I play video games, listen to the kind of music I do, tinker with my truck, etc.

come on man. Dont call us stupid (im 23 not a high schooler). I am a recent college grad and now in the working world (training right now). In our training class the majority of the guys have 27+ years and there are about 7 of us brand new. We get alot of flack because we are young. Today we were reffered to as the "cabbage patch kids"

Its all in fun dont let it get to ya

Those kids sure sounded awful disrespectful to me if they said it within earshot.

I'm 27 now, but I haven't changed at all since I was 17 and I would never have said anything like that any above a faint whisper.

Maybe they need to be reminded that if they're lucky, they too will live to be "old"... the years actually go by so fast these days... one day I'm 17, the next I'm 27, and I'm sure I'll be saying the same when I'm 77.

That's what I meant when I said the past came back to haunt me. When I was a highschooler in the 60s and we were doing our cruise thing, we weren't particularly respectful to those old guys.

Now, "I are one...". And I still don't have a Corvette!

Keep in mind that we drive some pretty darn nice trucks... These vehicles should be complimented on!!!!

I'm guessing that for most highschool kids these days a $35K truck is going to be way to much cabbage for them. I bet those youngin's were hoping that some hot chick in a mini-skirt jumped out instead!!! :)

Heh. My highschool had a "powder puff mechanic" club. They built some amazing project cars and trucks, and they did enjoy driving them. Surely a few silly decades haven't changed things up that much, have they? :)

Larry,

Hang in there bro. You are not that old. I think some else was just that young( inmature).

Just dream about corvettes man.

Oh, those Corvettes!!!!!!

In a way I enjoy the age thang. Since I'm in education, I work with a lot of high schoolers and they watch in AWE :) as I beat them in complex mathematics using a SLIDE RULE. I have one student who is so bugged by the slide rule and he spent the entire school year fooling around with it. He was very curious about it.

On a more lighter note, the "rockers" look at me in reference as I show them framed Beatles tickets of when I attended their concert in Houston. Ringo Starr threw hundreds of drum sticks out to the crowd, with his name on them and the year. I have those on display, also.

But, you know what? I have noticed that there really isn't much of a "generation gap" between car/truck enthusiasts. Anyway, it is certainly a lot of fun.

A local here in town has lots of nice playtoys, he sells the Boss Hogs as a job, so you know he has it rough. Late llast weekend had to stop at Wally world and when I pulled in, I saw him being grilled by some of the local kids driving a Honda, oh by the way he was driving his 32 Ford coupe with sucide (sp) doors and Indy rear tires, he had just got it running after installing a Blown 502 BB and new PG trans. I knew that he did not know who I was in the dark parking lot, so I told my daughter that "the pile of junk could not even turn those old wore out tires over!" I looked back and he had turned to see if he could tell who had said that, and then I told her "you know if it don't run chrome it" and I looked back and he was really bowed up to come kick the popo out of me and then I went back over to him and when he saw who it was he started laughing, the two kids in the honda tried to peel out as they left, then Rick really lit them up when he left, so you don't need to be a kid to give some one a hard time.
