What are all the required parts needed for header install?

So im looking at replacing the manifolds on the truck with LT headers..ive read a few places here and other sites to make sure and get "the kit" which would come with everything needed to do the job. Ive already called around shops and gotten quotes for install/labor only around $500.

 

Im not looking to do true duals from front to back.. im fine with headers, y pipe to high flow cat to existing flowmaster 40 series.

 

Because i dont have the budget right now to just buy a complete kit, i want to piece meal the components needed for the install..

But want to make sure i dont miss anything

 

Here is what i believe is all that is needed??

 

Headers

Y pipe

O2 extensions

hi flow cats

 

Now my biggest question is are there components that will allow for 100% DIY installs? no muffler shop involvement? or even a 90% DIY install with muffler shop only doing the welding of the hi flow cats inline?

As far as I know, there are not kits.

 

What you need:

Headers

Y Pipe (cats will be part of this, or you can go without). These are the highflow cats you mention, no need to get them seperate.

o2 Extensions not needed, at least I didn't need them with TSP Headers. Kooks/ARH shouldn't either from what others have said.

No shop is really needed for this work, it's all plug and play with the OEM catback as long as you get headers and a Y pipe from the main stream companies (Kooks, American Racing, Texas Speed).

well ive been talking and listening the wrong people and shops..

 

I had found a decent set of headers in the $400 to $500 range that included the y pipe.. its been a while, so cant remember what brand or where i found them..

 

Looks like im going to have to do additional reading about what im told over the phone or find online..

Go to Kooks website, download the install instructions. Gives you the general idea of what all is involved. Having a lift and tools in a shop is a plus (we did my install at my brothers shop), but there are a lot of people who have done this in their home garage as well.

Texas Speed is priced well in my opinion. I had a few little fitment issues, but nothing that bad.

 

You can get TSP Headers & Catless Y for $630. ($800 if you want cats).

 

Koooks / ARH will be close to double that price. They might have a little better fitment (although I have heard rubbings/leaks just the same as TSP), but not double the price better in my opinion. To each their own though, I can respect whatever anyone chooses.

Yea i was hoping i could buy the non-catted y pipe along with the catted so i can alternate between emissions tests..

im in houston and they do the emissions tests during inspections so would want the ability to swap before tests and so on..

There isn't much (if any) gain between Catted and Non Catted Y pipes. No need to get both and swap, just run the catted version.

 

I didn't need extension, correct. I bought some for the install and did not have to use them at all.

Y pipe rubbed on the Trans CrossMember. I had to just trim a little piece off, and then a little rub on one of the primaries, and just dremeled part of bracket down. Nothing hard. I have pics in my build thread I think of what I had to do for both, or maybe in the Texas Speed Header thread that I posted quiet a bit in.

I put a set of the OBX headers on my 05 silverado and ran them for three years with no problems.

I am in Houston also and I passed the emissions tests three times with no cats.

I am going to try them on my 15 Silverado with the 6.2. Here is the link to them on Ebay.

I installed them myself. The install was pretty easy. I used PB Blaster on the manifold and the 3 bolts on the exhaust flange. I applied the PB 3 times a day for two days. That might have been overkill but I didnt want to risk breaking a bolt off in the block.All of the bolts came off easily and they were three years old.

I did have to heat up the driver side header and flatten it a little as it was rubbing the frame.

I haven't read anywhere about the OBX fitment on the 2014 and up GM trucks.

I wouldn't hesitate to do the install on my 2015.

Thanks for the info. I live just inside the loop, near Shepherd and 610. Not a lot of room in my garage to wrench unfortunately haha
