Transmission problems

I have a 1997 Chevy Blazer four wheel drive automatic transmission. Will not shift. I have to manually shift it from 2nd gear to drive. No overdrive now either. It does not slip, I changed the tranny fluid and filter and it still will not shift automatically or go into overdrive. When I changed the fluid it was not burnt or discolored....still pinkish. Could my shift linkage need adjusted or replaced?

Typically the transmission governor is the culprit to shifting problems like that and is the easiest thing to check first. Typically a bad governor will have the teeth on it's plastic gear all chewed up. Pull it out and check it, it will be easy to tell if it's good or not. Another sign the governor's gear is bad is it will not downshift to 1st when you come to a stop and will instead try to leave in second gear from a stop and only manually shifting like you describe will make it shift properly. The plunger inside the governor shaft could also just be stuck or gunked up and just needs to be cleaned which you could do in a bucket of solvent. If the gear is good, make sure the plunger inside the outer shaft moves very easily, it should move just by tipping it upside down and back the other way, if not that could very well be your issue. There are several videos online dealing with GM transmission governors and regardless of the transmission model, they all do the same and should all work the same if there are no issues.
