2011 Silverado 1500 AFM lifter

My 2011 5.3L Silverado 1500 took a dive. Mechanic says AFM system has caused possible damage to valve lifters and will need to pull heads replace lifters. I've done some research and it sounds common. What does the group think?

A better way to put it is the issue is not "uncommon."

 

Hate to see it happen on an '11, though. The AFM components were beefed-up, a year or two earlier.

 

There again, the problem may have nothing to do with AFM at all. Have read several accounts of defective camshaft lobes, recently.

Time for a cam/lifter upgrade.

Then disable the AFM...

I got the range around 65,000 miles and it disabled the AFM. I get the same gas mileage and I believe my rings aren't getting all gunked up from the pressure relief valve since it does not get activated.

I just had cam and lifters replaced with an AFM-DOD-VVT delete kit from Texas Speed and Performance. Lifter on #5 cylinder (non-AFM lifter) failed (roller was pitted and cam was scarred up...did lifter fail and damage cam or was cam defective and damaged the roller?). Replaced with all new non-AFM lifters, new cam, cam sprocket, gaskets, bolts, valley plate, etc, and bought a tuner and tuned AFM out.
