I spoke with the service director just now, he called after seeing a negative review under their service satisfaction survey they sent me

 

because of the P0521 code, they are still pointing fingers at replacing the sensor, which was done once and did not fix the issue, and he still did not want to believe that changing the oil and filter was allowing the CEL to be cleared

 

so, I'm gonna run it for now, if the CEL returns, I will change the sensor one more time, if the CEL does not clear, I will change only the filter and continue to diagnose without the help of the dealer

As of yesterday my '13 with 49k miles has this issue, it's also started using a lot of oil. It used to use about a qt in 5k miles. Now it's used almost a gallon in 3,200 miles. I'm original owner. So should my power train warranty cover any issue my engine is having right now? My oil psi has never dropped below 25psi.

Warranty ran out this month... This month was 5 years, so I guess start with a new sender?

I am actually making a video on the repair for this. The passage really needs to be cleaned out. The trash falls back down into the oil filter and as soon as you crank it up after replacing the oil pressure sensor and the filter the clogs up the new oil pressure sensor filter and you are back with the same code. The oil pressure sensor passage goes right to the oil filter. Remove the oil pressure sensor, filter and the Engine oil filter and blow all that trash out the bottom.

 

I have never had one return after doing this. I will post the video when I am done with it. Will be in the next day or 2.

Good video, I'm just not sure how much junk mine will have in there since it only has 49k mi. I'm ordering new sender and oil filters, so I'll change filter and blow it out when I'm replacing the sender.

Replaced the sender and both filters after. Losing it all out and so far so good.

The dealer wanted $370 to replace the sender and filter... All of it was like 40min... ???.

P0521 does not necessarily mean the problem is always the sensor.  It can also indicate wiring or the ECM going/gone bad.  Further testing should be done according to the manual.

Always! Always! Always! Always check test the vehicle before replacing anything! Very good advice!

I had the dealer diagnose it. I paid them $85 for that so they better of properly diagnosed it. I don't have access to gm manuals or all data program, or anything like that to get diagrams and pinout to test the harness or sensor. I could of ohmed the sensor out, but i don't know which pins or the range it should fall in and what resistance should be at the different pressures.

Well, anyone can buy a subscription at ALLDataDIY for their truck and have access to just about all the information they need to keep their rig in top form.  A Tech2 or advanced scan too is a must as well; they pay for themselves very quickly in precious time and money saved too.

I have auto enginutity, but I don't have the enhanced gm package, I have the enhanced package for my dodge. I never wasted the extra money on having the gm enhanced also because I only had my 02 before and it runs ok with 220k mi. Heck a subscription to all data would probably cost more than $85 I paid to Johnson motors to diagnose my p0521.

I know I'm a little late to the game here but I just had this problem and thought I'd share....

 

I have a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3L. Bought it as second owner with (at the time 31,000 miles). Have all the service records from the previous owner.

 

It now has about 64,000 miles. Recently (at 63,200 miles) I had the normal oil and filter change. I usually use any good full synthetic and a K&N oil filter. I decided to change it up and tried out Mobil1 Annual Protection and a Mobil1 Annual protection oil filter to see how it does. Now before I get yelled at I would never go 20,000 between oil changes like Mobil1 claims can be done with the setup. I only do 7,000 or 8,000 miles a year in this truck.

 

Anyways, immediately after this oil change I noticed and change in my oil pressure. I was use to seeing a minimum of about 27 psi at idle and 40 psi plus at highway speeds with the oil fully hot. After this oil change I was getting 18-20 psi at idle and maybe 25 psi at highway speeds under the same conditions.

 

I watched the gauge over the past 800 miles and it stayed about the same. I thought "well, good rule of thumb is 10 psi per 1,000 RPM."

 

Today I got a engine check light and it was a low pressure warning. Took it to my mechanic and he crawled through it and tested the sensor and said it seemed to be working properly but to maybe replace it. He also said it could be a bad oil pump or clogged oil filter but that would be unlikely due to be a good filter and good oil. I asked him to change the oil filter and oil and we'll go from there. I bought Valvoline full synthetic and a Purolator BOSS oil filter and had him do the change....

 

There was a immediate change! Drove the truck on back roads and the highway for 30 miles. Speeds from 5 mph to 75 mph. Also with it in tow mode some of the way to get higher rpms. Everything is back to the way it use to be. There was no viable sludge in the oil filter or lower engine (he used a little snake camera through the drain hole to show me). He thinks the oil filter was either incredibly clogged with God knows what or the filter media was poorly made and caused the oil to bypass the media through the valve...

 

Either way I'm happy so far. Hope this may help someone!

I have absoluelty seen bad filters cause this problem too. I had a customer come in the other day and he had just had an oil change done on his vehicles withing 200 miles. He had less than 12psi of oil pressure on the sensor. Tested the pressure at the oil filter using the oil pressure adapter. ( https://amzn.to/2DtzN6B ) and it had 22 at idle. Put his filter back on it and it went to 12 again. Changed his filter to an ACDelco filter and it went to 22 at idle on the dash. That was a Purolator filter as well. Not saying they are bad filters.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
