Anyone paint iridescent pearl?

Bought a hood for my truck and just wondering if anyone has sprayed the new iridescent peal tri coat yet and have you had luck with it matching, how many coats did you spray etc etc.....?

Thanks

Never sprayed, but touched up a small chip on my '16 Malibu. And the GM touchup by itself will never match, it is essentially slightly milky with sparkles.....if down to the primer it will come out a dull grey with iridescent specks.

A lot of experimenting to get a small touchup that looks decent.....panels are best left to body experts and you can bet it will cost extra to match that optional $1000 paint. Problem solved on the chips by first putting a white base coat over the primer and then when dry applying GMs sparkles in snot touchup and then a clear coat touch up.

Probably why they call it tri-coat - white/ sparkles-in-snot/ clearcoat.

I have painted on the side as a hobby. And hobby as in "you do the sanding, and I will do the shooting". I haven't shot any GM parts with it, but I have shot some Nissan parts. It is definitely a pain even getting someone else to do the grunt work.

The bumper had black primer, so we had to shoot a white primer to get the contrast removed. Then a white base coat, then two pearl coats, and then the clear coat, which required two as well to get the sheen to match. I wouldn't do it again, and I know I will never buy a vehicle in it due to the work involved.

The ford red tri-coat is much easier, since its just a tinted clear as the mid coat, and really only needs one coat.

Yes after buying just the paint and not even clear or primer I've decided never to buy another pearl white truck again... this is my 2nd one but 1st one to want painted things lol..

I kinda planned on using a white primer also and I'm gonna experiment with the pearl on a scrap piece of something... I only bought enough to do the top side, this shit is ridiculously expensive. I'll just shoot regular summit white for the underneith. Gonna spray it Sunday after I block and prep it Friday night, wish me luck

I had a 2015 sierra w/ the tri coat. Had to touch up chips and it was terrible using the GM paint. My buddy owned a body shop and has all white cars. He told me he would never own a tri coat car because it is impossible to match. Said he turned away cars that were tri coat because the success rate of pleasing a customers was so low. I loved the color and got many compliments on my truck. I am currently considering a 17 with the new frost tri coat? But this subject is making me think otherwise. Best of luck

Its my experience with pearl and some metallics  you need to blend 1/2 to 3/4s of the way into the next panel to do it right.

Even my silver Trailblazer SS is painted half way down the front fenders to blend in the paint on the new carbon fiber hood I installed.  We tried it without the blend and even using all the hi tech matching technology available it was not good.

I recently bought a pearl 2014 high country that got the door edge scraped and I did not notice it until later but before taking delivery. Long story short it would require painting both doors for about 6 chips on back edge of door.  I ended up buying a 2017 instead which turned out for the best as I prefer the iridescent over the white diamond.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
