Whine at Startup and Acceleration

Recommended Posts

I think I have read about this before, but wanted to see how common this is. During cold starts and low acceleration, I get a faint whining sound. Sounds similar to the old power steering whine. These new trucks have so many different sounds when starting up.. whether its ticking or something else.

This slight noise is normal. What's new on this generation of the 5.3L is the oil pump is now a gerotor style pump, the same ones found in transmissions for many years. It is placed on the front of the crankshaft. The noise you hear is the operating noise of this pump, especially at first start up when it's somewhat dry. They are durable and provide a very consistent pressure based on the pump vanes position. Now, believe me, you'll know when it sounds abnormal.

Good to know! Most people can't hear it when they ride with me, but I always can.
