New Chevy Owner

Never in a million years would I have thought I'd be driving something other than a Ford but here I am.....

So, seeing as my Chevy knowledge is very limited, I need some suggestions on the basics; i.e. level/tires.

I've owned my 16 Z71 crew cab for less than 2 weeks and I've noticed compared to my Fords that going over speed bumps, the front is pretty rough but the rear is really smooth. I had the opposite on my other trucks which all had level spacers in the front so I'm worried about adding them to the chevy since the front end isn't much fun as it is.

So what is the general consensus on leveling the front for ride quality? Bilsteins?

265/65/18 right now and thinking of something in the 33" range(prefer taller over wider).

Suggestions and info is much appreciated

I've got pretty much the same truck. With the 18 inch wheels and a level, the biggest tires you can install without rubbing is a 285/65/18. Also, my last truck was an F150, and I agree with your observations of the suspension.

 

I'm happy with my setup. Ive got BFG All Terrain T/A KO 285/65/18's with a 2.25 in Reddy Lift 2.25 in level. I've also got the Borla exhaust that can be ordered from the dealer. The tires have excellent traction in the snow and mud but do not make significant road noise. The exhaust has a nice rumble and sounds like a power boat when I stomp on it, but is nice and quiet on the highway. All I have to do is have the stereo on at about 25% volume and I can't hear the tires or exhaust at all.

 

I don't know anything about the Bilstein shocks. I stuck with the stock Rancho's. It's a little bumpy in speed bumps or ruts but the truck handles nicely on or off road. I've learned to slow WAY down when I roll over speed bumps.

 

I think you will enjoy this truck. It's different than the Ford. I found it to be more ergonomic and the transmission, while a bit clunky at first, becomes smooth and compliant as you put some miles on it.

Great info, I appreciate it. Yeah the tranny is a little different but my 13 ecoboost had a noticeable clunk between 1st and 2nd intermittently.

 

And by the way, I hope my post doesn't sound like I am bashing Chevy; just been a Ford guy. That being said, I'm not regretting my decision at all!

 

So I'm looking at either the bilsteins or rancho quick lift. I don't mind a little rake, so perfectly level isn't a big concern to me.

Go with 275/70/18 tires, true 33". I'll be leveling with Fox 2.0s on all 4 corners, and 3" block in the back.

 

Won't require any trimming w/ 18" stock wheels.

Do you think there would be an issue with that size and the 5100's?

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
