Parking Brake Adjustment, cable replace

Recommended Posts

01 suburban 4wd, 330k. Had replaced parking brake shoes some 8 years ago (after broken parking pawl problem).

PB was not holding so went to investigate. Found a shoe worn down, replaced, replaced hardware and adjusted shoes to barely fit inside rotor. Still couldn't get PB to hold. Tried tightening cable adjusting bolt even adding a couple of nuts to act as bushing. Still no luck. Decided cable was stretched, replaced with a new one that was clearly 1.5" shorter. PB is barely holding now - only after I added a single bushing. Pedal is on the floor.

What's the experience out there? Should I replace the other cables? Could thru all be stretched? GM sites show cables are discontinued so using parts store cables which are thinner - I guess I can expect these to stretch out even sooner.

Dorman makes decent replacement cables. I have replaced all of mine at the same time. Not too time consuming or difficult. If you have the shoe in hat style rear parking brake it doesn't work very well. It will never hold like an old ebrake handle. Its just for parking.
