AC question

On this nice on hot 4th of July weekend my AC decided it wanted to start acting up, and it would work off and on. I know NOTHING about AC's. So finally I looked at the compressor which had condensation and was cold, so I assume it was working. My question is does anyone know what those 2 black knobs on the tubing coming out of the compressor are? The reason I ask is because they were not screwed all the way down. When I tightend them, the AC started blowing cold again and I have not had any problems since. Thanks is advance.

Black Knobs most likely the charging ports covers. High and low side.
