Tuning my new 2017 1500 Sierra Denali 6.2

Well after alot of research and purchasing the wrong tuner. I finally am on my way to getting my 2017 tuned. I want to share my pitfalls and research that has gotten me this far for anyone else deciding to do a full tune on their new 2017.

GMC is finally catching up and making things alot harder for us to acess our ECU's and TCM's. To get into the new E92 sidi ECU's there is now an extra step for authorization to gain acess to the ECU where you have to get a special authorization code. But it is still possible to get in. The new 2017 8 speed and 10 speed transmissions with the T87A TCU's are a whole different animal. They are practically encrypted and there are only two tuners that I have found that can get into them. Hp tuners and Trifecta. I have seen mixed reviews for Trifecta and I am not going that route so I don't know much about that.

I decided to go with hp tuners because that is what my local shop uses and I had to explain to them they can't get into the TCU it is locked They haven't done a 2017 yet. HP tuners offers a service for $200 to send in your TCU and they will unlock it and send it back. Here is the link.

I ordered EFI Live flashscan V2 from Blackbear Performance and it will work for the ECU but not the TCU. Also need to spend another $50 to get the authorization code from EFI Live to get into only the ECU. EFI Live has no plans whatsoever to support the new T87A 2017 transmissions. So I have to return my flashscan V2.

I ordered the VCM Suite from hptuners here :

http://www.hptuners.com/order.php

And also sent them my TCU to unlock and then I will have full acess to the ECU and TCU. Only then will I be able to get a full tune on the engine and trans.

Just sharing some info I learned in the last week after hours of research. My trans controller is on it way to hp tuners.

So sounds like you went with BBP for a tune, then changed your mind once you learned EFILive can't tune the 2017+ TCM's yet?

HP Tuners really sounds like a local tuner programmer. So if you have the shop near you it could work well.

Glad you got everything figured out!

I want a local shop to do the tune but I also want the tuner and software so I can eventually learn myself and more so I have the ability to flash back to stock back anytime myself. The realtime monitoring on the PC with the guage dashboard and DTC code reading and all that are pretty helpful as well if I have to diagnose a problem in the future.

I have an 07 Silverado can my computer retune or Reloaded to get rid of a false reading because the truck is running fine but my engine light stays on throttle control sensor

And if so where do I go besides the dealer and how much should it be

Sure you could have a tuner turn off the engine light but your engine light is on for a reason. I would be more interested in finding out whats causing that light to come on.

GMC? I think you mean EPA.

GMC wrote the software no matter who's breathing down their necks. I think they get some kind of credits for more fuel efficient cars but not sure about locking customers out of the computers.

Just a more modern version of the brass caps over the idle mixture screws, I'm sure GM/Ford/younameit didn't cook that one up.

I believe when I went in to have one problem fixed at the dealership that the worker put a code into my computer because I asked him what he was doing after he knew what the problem was he looked at me and said oh nothing and disconnected the computer reader that he had a week after that that's when my engine light popped on throttle control sensor this was just a little bit before 60000 miles they played the game with me it could be this it could be that it could be this whatever when I found out that all they wanted to do was replace the whole throttle body which is over $300 I said no I went and got a scanner reader myself same code come up I deleted like I said it runs fine but when I come to a stop and it idles engine light pops back on with the same code it's been that way since now I have a 199000 miles on it I'm just wondering if there is a way to reload the computer without having to go to the dealer

Yes getting a custom tune done would work if you did it at a good local shop they could tell you exactly what is going on as well with that light. Also you would have the benefit of the tune. The software and hardware that ordered is fairly complicated and expensive to do a tune your self. A tune is probally in the $400 range and the hptuners vcm suite is $650.

FYI you do not need the $650 software to have a shop do the tune. They also have the ability to turn off specific codes permanently.

I am in Jacksonville Florida do you guys know any good shops here

I'm in NJ your best bet would be to look for a corvette camaro performance shop. That is how I found my local shop.

Have you bothered to test the (throttle position) sensor?

    • Welcome back! No, it definitely doesn't pass the sniff test. Even "ceasefire" needs an alternative definition these days.    $5.29 at Kroger today
    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
