2002sierra with 8.1 and allison

ive been looking for a truck for my 17 year old for awhile. mechanic at work just put for sale signs on his truck. its a 2002 8.1 with the allison. 182,000 miles. body is rough but will be his first ride . thoughts on that combo with those miles? thanks

Do you really want your 17 year old to have a 8.1L?

 

That's a lot of power for a 17 year old, not to mention 10 mpg.

As said, I would have an agreement on gas[emoji23] either you'll be paying for gas on an 8mpg machine or he needs to know he will be.

 

Does he need a truck? If it's just something he's gonna drive around, look for something else. The 8.1 is made to haul heavy

 

The 8.1 with Allison is a great combo though, very reliable. Gas money being the only complaint

I just did a reman long block on my 2005 GMC C5500 Topkick 33' box truck with the 8.1 liter and the Allison 5 spd. transmission.

 

It will easily cost you twice as much to rebuild that motor as a conventional big block 454 for example, and there are virtually no speed parts or aftermarket parts to improve performance and /or fuel efficiency if you or your son are motorheads and want to modify it further.

 

The only things available are extremely expensive and pretty much from one supplier. Other than that, it's a beast of a motor with 450 foot pounds of torque.

 

I'm getting about 11 to 12 miles per gallon on a 12000 lb empty truck. I'm getting about 8 to 9 when it's loaded up to about thirty thousand pounds. Not a big difference no matter how you load it...
