Rear End Noise After Random Bang

Recommended Posts

So I was driving my truck home from work yesterday going about 35mph and all of a sudden a random loud bang (almost as if hitting a pothole) happened and made a pretty good shake inside the cab. I made sure in the rear view and went back and looked that their was no potholes in the road and it was all good.

Ever since, I can hear a noise coming from the rear end, almost sounds as if something got play in it (like a u-joint or something) after the bang. It's especially noticeable when going over bumps like railroads and such. The truck seems to be driving fine otherwise and hasn't had any issues but I know whatever happened wasn't normal or something to sweep under rug.

Thanks in advance guys!

It's going to a shop hopefully tomorrow and will get fixed but I would like to be able to point him to an approximate guess on the issue. Otherwise, I totally agree with you.

Also, the hollow banging noise only really seems to happen when hitting bumps of any decent size. It doesn't make too much noise otherwise. I checked the exhaust and hangers, the lead springs, etc. Nothing yet. Will keep other updated if found out source tomorrow!

I'd be guessing an issue withg the rear diff (spider gear exploded). Similar thing happened to my friends truck years ago.

Would an issue with the differential only be noticeable when hitting bumps? Accelerating, stopping, etc all feel and sound the same. Thanks!

It was my buddy's '88 Chevy, but I'm assuming nothing much has changed in the diff design.

We were out driving some rural roads, and it would happen hitting bumps. I thought it was the steady bearing, but it wasn't the case. At the end, he had to drive with a little pressure on the brake. As long as it was "loaded" a bit and not free wheeling it seemed fine.

When we got back to his place, we will the diff cover off, and the spider dropped out in pieces, and thanks to the nice journey we did, it shredded the teeth off the ring gear as well. The only thing keeping the truck going was the metallic sludge in the oil!

If it is in the diff, the sooner you find out the better. Otherwise you can cause more damage in there. I have heard of just a tooth breaking off as well.

Thanks for the very detailed explanation of your experience! Unfortunately, I can't seem to otherwise find the source of the noise by moving suspension parts, exhaust, etc but I haven't taken anything apart. It's scheduled to go in to the shop Monday so hopefully he can find the cause and get on with it lol.. appreciate it!!

Cracked bearing cup on the u-joint would be my first guess. I'd check it before pulling the diff cover.

Well had it quickly checked out today and I just have a spring shackle in the rear drivers that busted and the springs are resting on the bed. On the way to the shop to drop it off, my dad had noticed that my truck sat a little low to one side and that's how we noticed it.

Will be getting the shackles replaced and while he's at it I'll likely have him replace the front coil springs as well (front passenger spring has a crack on the bottom from before I got it). Is there any other parts that should be replaced on a 130k mi. truck while those parts are off and being replaced? I was thinking of doing the shocks but didn't know if it was more of a headache than its worth.

    • Brought my 2015 Colorado into the dealership to check my touch screen issues, had that ghost touch thing happening. They said I needed a new touch screen and they could either order me one for $500. The lady at the service deck was nice enough to tell me I could order a touch screen online for less, she did stipulate that the touch screen had to be factory OEM, you can't pair an aftermarket screen to my radio seeing it was 2015, it had to be a GM factory OEM only. I found a few on Amazon and Ebay by the numbers on the back of the old screen, DJ080PA-01A GM# 22740886, Some said "OEM" in the description and others just said "Replacement". Would a replacement be the same as a OEM as long as it had the same numbers on the back of the screen? In some of the descriptions they also show different brand names but same numbers, is that an issue?
    • I have both but typically use the 4 legged walker (wheels on front, ski's on back).   The four wheeler is starting to be used on "longer" outdoor walks.  The 4 legged walker is particularly helpful in practicing good walking posture.  Both of my knees are at different stages of recovery and I'm trying to not develop poor habits.  I can actually manage with a cane but it's very difficult not to favor one leg over the other.  My PT recommends I continue with my 4 legged walker for a while.  Yesterday was four weeks since my last knee replacement and I'm excited about my progress to date.  It has been a hell of a rough journey so far but it is exciting to witness  systematic and continuous improvement.  I went for years watching the decline of my "mobility".  It seems that everyday now I am alerting my wife to something I can do now that I couldn't a day or two ago!  I encourage anyone facing the prospect of knee replacement to share any concerns with others who have had the surgery.  It isn't an instant fix but rather is a considerable amount of short term pain for long term gain.  Recovery time and pain levels vary for individuals post surgery but the end results are typically very positive and I've never encountered anyone regretting having had the surgery.
    • The lifter issue can be dealt with by shorter oil changes and quality oil IMO.
    • Got heavy rain, hail and light rain yesterday.
    • I'm putting in an A-pillar pod/gauges, and I'm asking if anybody can identify a (preferably) fuse for a switched power and illumination circuit on the driver's side interior fuse panel. Offhand, everything I checked with a test light was constant-hot, and I'd much rather uses a piggyback fuse. I can certainly find a wire, but I'd rather not half-tap.   Thanks in advance for any help.
