Time for a new engine

So I started hearing a noise. After further investigation, it seems to be a spun rod bearing. Judging by my "calibrated ear" it's one of the back 4 cylinders. I found a 01 6.0 from a 3500 that I plan to pick up tomorrow. After a bit of clean up, inspection and repair anything it needs, I'll drop it in my 00 1500. Should be a nice little upgrade.

 

Although not quite what I was planning. I was hoping to build a 396 stroker with a 6.0 block and a Scat stroker kit. Looks like that will have to wait since I need to get the truck healthy enough to use before the snow flys.

So, I got the motor and it's pretty good overall. It appears to have gotten some water or something in cylinder 3. I'm debating whether to just hone that cylinder or take the bottom end to the machine shop and make it all new with an over bore and new pistons and rings. The crank, rods and bearings all seem fine. Cam, heads and valve train all check out good too.

 

Any thoughts on what to do with the bottom end?

take it in and make it new. You'll be glad you did and it will give you peace of mind.

Engine is ready to go in the truck. It's all resealed, new sensors, new bearings and cleaned up. Now I just have to pull the old one and set this one in.

 

I know it will run on the 5.3 computer, but to get the most out of it, I'll need a tune. Any recommendations?

Well it was a long and brutal week end, but the new engine is in and the truck runs good again. I can't say the 6.0 made huge difference, but it does seem a little stronger.

I got the 6.0 tuned today.  Not a huge difference in peak numbers, the midrange is very noticeable and the upped line pressure makes the shifting feel crisp instead of muddy.

 

Baseline: 256 hp, 284 tq

Final: 267 hp, 311 tq

 

The numbers are corrected at the rear wheels.

 

 

Never ceases to amaze me how much the automatic and drive train suck up power.
