I have a 2017 GMC Sierra I will be towing it behind a RV . Does anyone know if I can  permanently disable the steering lock

No not without major column surgery. Just do what the owners manual says and turn ign. to release the lock transfercase in neutral (4x4 only) and drive.

I am not against modifications the owner manual tell me to disconnect the neg  terminal of the battery   Kind of a pain  If I could remove the lock  mechanism I would do so permanently . I just don’t know if it would affect any other safety and interlocks   in the steering column.

thought???

It's not hard to remove the steering lock. It's not going to cause any security faults or anything like that. It's not that hard of a job either, just be careful when you remove the airbag that you keep the CPA's and put them back in so that you don't have an airbag light afterwards. If you lose the CPA's you can get one from the dealership. also get a good puller for the steering wheel. Makes it so much easier and it's cheaper than accidentally messing up the threads on the upper steering shaft. If you need any pictures on what you need to remove in order to get it going let me know and I can look them up.
