Windows Messenger Question

My wifes 1/2 sister watched the kids for us over the weekend one night.  She was on my computer and took it upon herself to load her user name into "Windows Messenger".  I had never used that feature before, but now everytime I got online and got my mail I would get these annoying pop-ups and it would show her name as being "online".

I ended up going into "msconfig" and stopped the thing from loading everytime I'm online (it no longer resides in my system tray), but what is bugging me is that I know here user ID is listed in the messenger program, and I can't get rid of it.  I've tried right clicking and highlighting etc... but no luck so far.

I think she must have stuck herself in as the primary logon ID and her stinkin' name is linked to my Outlook Express.  I'm not familiar with this feature of Windows so please help me to get her out!!!

(BTW I'm running WinXP)

To dramatically expand the list of applications you can remove from Windows XP after installation, navigate to C:\WINDOWS\inf (substituting the correct drive letter for your version of Windows) and open the sysoc.inf file. Under Windows XP Professional Edition RC1, this file will resemble the following by default:

[Version] Signature = "$Windows NT$"

DriverVer=06/26/2001,5.1.2505.0

[Components]

NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4

WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7

Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7

Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7

NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7

iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7

com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,hide,7

dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7

IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7

TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,hide,2

msmq=msmqocm.dll,MsmqOcm,msmqocm.inf,,6

ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7

fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7

AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

msnexplr=ocmsn.dll,OcEntry,msnmsn.inf,,7

smarttgs=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,msnsl.inf,,7

RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7

Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7

AccessUtil=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,accessor.inf,,7

CommApps=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,communic.inf,HIDE,7

MultiM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,multimed.inf,HIDE,7

AccessOpt=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,optional.inf,HIDE,7

Pinball=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,pinball.inf,HIDE,7

MSWordPad=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wordpad.inf,HIDE,7

ZoneGames=zoneoc.dll,ZoneSetupProc,igames.inf,,7

[Global]

WindowTitle=%WindowTitle%

WindowTitle.StandAlone="*"

The entries that include the text hide or HIDE will not show up in Add/Remove Windows Components by default. To fix this, do a global search and replace for ,hide and change each instance of this to , (a comma). Then, save the file, relaunch Add/Remove Windows Components, and tweak the installed applications to your heart's content.

-----------------------------------------

you want to remove  the HIDE to  msmsgs and just leave a black space between the commas

now save then goto  control panel -> add/remove programs -> windows components then choose to turn off windows messenger

Thanks Larry,  but all I really want to do is remove her from the "messenger" program.  Not remove the program all together.  It is just the "user id" [email protected] that I want to get rid of...

no matter what you do the program will still try to run and connect even if you remove her name since she started the program.

not to mention the amount of virus's that travel through the windows messenger system.

Open messenger up - go to tools - pull down - pick options - should show you 5 tabs - under accounts try removing/overwriting hers - this may clear it - don't have a throwaway machine to try it on [sorry]

Other option - go to My Computer - control panel - add/remove programs - look for messenger - pick remove - reboot - use windows update which will tell you it is missing [i think, haven't tried] and offer to install - follow instructions.

If you are successful threaten to break her arm if she screws with it again - otherwise use her hotmail address and sign her up on a dozen porn sites - oops, forgot she was kin. :D

I tried to send a contact to "messenger Support" but I have to have a "Passport Acct", which I don't.

Gandolphxx, I have already unchecked everything in her "personal" settings, but her name still resides on the "login" screen.

In order for the program to run now, I have to go to "start/all programs/windows messenger" and then it tries to log her on...

Wouldn't that make her your 1/2 sister in law?  ;)

You could un-install it and re-install it. That should do the trick.

I just "restored" my computer to a date earlier than when my 1/2 sister-in-law did this, but it didn't do what I had hoped.

In order to be able to remove and re-install I believe I have to do what Larry explained.

Wooo Hooo!!!   :D   I got rid of her!!!

Here is what I did:

In WinXP I opened the control panel and then "User Accounts"

I clicked on "change an account"

Then clicked on my name (I am the Administrator) and she attached her crap to me  :angry:

Under "related tasks" I clicked on "manage my network passwords"

There she was sitting so pretty until I highlighted her and clicked on "remove".

All Gone!!!

Cool - glad your computer is rid of her!

Regarding viruses and such, just install a good virus program on your PC, be sure to download the updates ( it will prompt you when the are available) and use a free firewall program if you're using DSL or a cable connection.
