Upgrading? Maybe? to 2500

So for that last month or so I have been kicking around the idea of upgrading my 2015 GMC Sierra SLT crew cab with the 6.2 max trailing package to a new 2500 with a crew cab. Now I primarily use this truck to tow my 31' travel trailer it weighs 7200 lbs unloaded so I am pretty close to the max limit of the truck but we don't usually go that far on our trips and we only go a handful of times a summer. I lease the truck and I have about 8 more lease payments and the truck only has 16,000 miles on it, it is looking like I can get a 2500 for about 20 bucks more a month to buy it. I also have a wdh for the camper and the truck tows it ok. I just want some other peoples opinions.

Buzzy. I don’t understand how you can be close to trailer weight limit. Your max tow should be at least 10,000+ rating. The new 2018 is 11k. I just drove one yesterday. It even had p rated tires rated 2400# bbcdd8cffcdef8f936bc8c429936c591.jpg
So today I check my old school 99 tires and they are rated higher. c591d8d81497ea71caa68c536a097472.jpg

Now I know trailer rating and payload are different. But the 2018 PL with max tow surely is higher than my 99 with “HD” suspension.

Post up what the ratings are on your tires and for the LT tires you are considering. I am going through this similar conundrum except are considering stepping UP to the 6.2 max tow

Your  truck is a '15 SLT CC 6.2 Max trailer with 16 k miles?  This sounds like a great tow vehicle and so why not consider buying it at the end of your lease?   Buying a new truck may only be 20 dollars a month more but your unsecured debt will increase substantially.  You know your current truck and it is probably much better than any other vehicle you could buy for the price of your buyout.

I was about to type something similar but not as nice.

If you decide to lease your next truck whether 1500 or 2500 look into a low mileage lease if your not already for the lower payment.

With such low miles on your current truck you might be better off to buy it outright and sell it/trade it in on the purchase of your next one. Might end up paying less than you are now. I know a couple guys around here that get new trucks every other year or so that don’t rack up many miles like you and it ends up costing them less than what leasing them would. I think this would be especially true with a 2500 as used low mile 3/4 tonners bring a premium.
