Chrome on hitch ball flaking off.

Recommended Posts

When I unhitched my new trailer after bringing it home, I noticed flakes of chrome falling off the ball.  I know the chrome finish wears off over time but I've never seen it flake off like this after one 75 mile drive.  I spent a little over $1k for this hitch setup and surprised to see this happen.  I know this is a reflection on the ball and not the setup.   Is it worth making a fuss or is this finish only meant to be this temporary?

No need for that. Just note the brand and stay away in the future. I would use that ball unless it squeaks to bad

You're right but I still think think I'll make a fuss.  They charged me $32 for just the ball.  The hitch setup labor was $119 and they added $15 for shop supplies.  The icing on the cake was when I asked what he torqued the 3/4" x 4" height adjustment bolts, he simply said, "they're not coming off".  I asked again and he said he simply takes a 4' bar to the end of wrench and applies his 200 lbs of body weight.  The instructions that came with the hitch clearly states 267 Ft.lbs.  I could potentially have 800 ft. lbs. of torque on these bolts!
