Steering issues/rack and pinion

Good afternoon, I was hoping someone could answer a few questions for me. I have a 2015 Silverado V6 crew caband just had the steering go out. Took it to a local dealer and they diagnosed it as a bad rack and pinion and quoted me $2200 to change it, I took the truck back and said I’d be in touch . I have some mechanical knowledge and am pretty confident I can do the job, after doing a lot of reading I’ve seen in a few places that even after it’s changed it must go to the dealer to be programmed as it will not work untill then, can anyone deny or confirm that ? Also I’ve found online a place called Detroit axle that sells this part for $980 I was wondering if anyone has heard of them and what the quality is. Thank you ahead for your response .

It's all electronic/electric steering so I would suspect it would have to be programmed as to what position it is in.
