 Newbie Here.

Just bought a 98 Yukon and am doing some general checking of the motor. I would like to clean the egr valve, but do not know how to do it. What do you recommend? It has 80K so I would assume it needs it.

You don't hear of to many people cleaning them. I guess you could with carb cleaner and a brush. Usually if it works leave it alone, if it fails replace it. IMHO

I do not know about the Vortecs but I have replaced the EGR on my 94 305 TBI. It was very simple. The only problem I had was that I accidently knocked off the MAP sensor hose off the throttle body and I ran horrible. Once I plugged the hose back in it ran fine and has since then 6 months ago.

When the EGR goes bad, its bad. There is no real way to "repair" an EGR valve. I doubt cleaning it will do any good considering that the part of the EGR valve that has failed is probably the electrical part of it.

:smash: Thanks for the suggestions. Its a $200 part and I was hoping I could just clean it.

Geez, I didn't think it would be that expensive!!! :smash:

What happens if your EGR isn't working correctly and throws a SES light once in a while.. does MPG suffer?? Performance??

Whats the dealio??

Thanks..

Basically when the EGR goes south, it is unable to recirculate exhaust gases back into the intake tract for re-burning. This contributes to poor fuel economy, and yes if bad enough, can hamper performance.

I'd shop somewhere else, Ive never seen any EGR cost $200.00. Usually they cost about 35.00-40.00. EGR valves open up at approx 1800-2000 rpm to allow gas recirculation, if they stick open they cause rough idling. They can give error codes. To check it just put a vacuum to it, if it holds the vacuum its good. If it bleeds off it bad. Back in the late 80's GM used a few that would bled off vacumm so when they went bad they would always close keeping idle problem to a minimum. Just make sure you have vacuum to the egr valve before you condem it. ERG always plays with low rpm problems, rarely up upper rpm. Hope this helps :smash:

Whoa, totally different ball game on the vortec. You have a stepper motor controlled EGR valve. The computer tells it when to supply exhaust. The high price is for the whole assembly including this fancy motor. The unit is about the size of a beer can. I had mine off and there is a little needle(big needle more like a plunger) and seat type arrangement that you can clean but mine was fine after 75,000 miles. I wouldn't bother with it. If your EGR doesn't function, the computer will tell you so.

The EGR valve on the vortec is not the vacuum controlled, diaphragm type deal seen on the older vehicles. The price of 200$ seems reasonable when you see this thing.

Thats the exact problem im having with my 97 at idle it performs like crap missing and such and up in the 1800-2200 range it performs like crap .

It has been throwing an egr code for some time now so I just bought one off ebay for 115 bucks but I found another for 100 bucks that I posted the link to in my previous post
