I might be interested in those Infinity speakers, I was about to buy some new Pioneers for the rear to replace my blown-to-hell boston accoustics. I currently have Alpine components in the front, which will soon be replaced with Infinity Refrence or Kappa components also.

What condition are the speakers in, and how do they sound with the 8400 (that's the same head unit I have)

Posted

To be honest with you, im not sure how they sound really

Ive got the front kappas amp'd with about 100x2 so i hardly hear the rears, lol.

Sounds real nice. I was thinking about getting a 4x amp for all the speakers, but I'm not sure I want to blow so much money on that. Does installing an amp really help out? I know the amp in the 8400 is high quality and it sounds great as it is, just how much higher quality would an external amp get?

Posted

Yes, the 8400's amp is ok.

If your going for better speakers though, you wont get their full potential.

The 8400 only puts out about 22 watts RMS. I say "only" cuz there are amps that can put out so much more and are fairly affordable.

The 6.5" Kappa components are rated at about 90 watts rms and ive got 100 rms going to them with no problems and the difference is night and day.

Im sure your aware that some other speakers can handle even more. The differencei realized is that without the amp, i couldnt turn the radio up too much without starting to realize distortion. The Fosgate ive got makes everything so smooth and effortless.

Dont get me wrong, the 8400 alone is alright, just not enough for me.

Yeah, I used to have a sony deck and I couldn't hardly turn it up at all before there was really bad distortion. The 8400's amp is much better than that, and its not pushing much bass through because that's being taken care of by my subwoofer. I'll probably end up buying another Rockford amp for my speakers (Rockford makes amazing stuff) when I buy the other infinitys, but we'll see.

You also said you have a 100x2 powering the fronts, what's pushing the rears? Do you just have the rears wired to the head unit, or spliced out the amp, or what? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of using an amp if you're just going to use the internal amp to power other speakers that are closer to your head anyway?

Posted

As i consider the rears as just fill, they are just being powered by the head unit.

Them little 4x6's arent big enough for anything other than high frequencies and the Kappas tweeter handles that very well, almost too well.

So ive only got the amp on my front components.

Heck, i may sell my 2 channel amp also since ill be needing an amp in my Maxima. At least i can go with 6.5's in the rear of the maxima so i think i should go with a 4ch amp instead.

Posted

Yeah that's what I've been thinking myself, my truck has the rears as the main source of sound and the 6.5's as fill, just because they're closer to my head. In my new setup I might do exactly what you did, sounds pretty solid. What I'm really wondering is if the sound gets cleaner and crisper at lower volume levels on the amp than the head unit... For example: if I'm playing music at a medium volume (say around 18 - 25 on the 8400 vol dial) there isn't really any distortion. If I set the fronts up with a good amp and get good rear speakers (and set the crossover correctly as to not kill the rears), will the sound be crisper or anything with the amp, or does it really only shine at excessive volumes?

I'm interested in the exhaust, do you have the part # for it? What truck is it off, I have an '03 Avalanche and would like to see if it fits.

Thanks,

Ed

Dont think it fits man. I dont have the part number on had, but if you look at gibsons website, im pretty sure youll notice there are separate applications for an avalanche and regular xtended cab trucks.

    • I’ve had several. The last was sold at the dealership hard with a soft top. They all leaked a little. The only one that didn’t was a topper. My supplier miss understood. It was supposed to be a painted match topper. I was getting ready for a trip couldn’t wait so I took it. It was easy to remove if needed and didn’t leak.
    • Very nice truck. I’m a strange one. I never considered trucks family vehicles. Work or personal vehicles for men. Watching kids or ladies climb into trucks can be amusing. I tried for retirement but the wife didn’t take long with her displeasure. That led to our first SUV. Now a minivan. People really miss the boat on that one. Even a midsized truck was vetoed. My wife’s car is off limits. That’s ok by me. I could do a full sized car ok. But for an old guy you have to sit first then bring the legs in. Then spin towards the door put both legs out then stand up. Mini vans are just high enough to step in and sit. Step out and walk. I hear the Toyota Crown is kinda like that. I’ll try that sometime. Go ahead and laugh, you’ll be old someday. A regular cab truck. I’m kinda looking for an older GM V-8. The Ridgeline is OK. But we’re not exactly speaking the same language. It’s a looker. But I’m missing that GM feeling, an old GM.
    • For clarity: per the manufacturer the 6.6L takes 8 quarts of oil with a filter replacement. I always add that amount which puts near the top of the dipstick range.
    • Looking to purchase a used Sierra and want to have a tonneau cover put on at the dealer if possible, to avoid the back-and-forth with shipping & delivery of a cover.  Does anyone have a tonneau cover they can recommend that is completely watertight?  I've had BakFlip MX4, Retrax, and it seemed like everything leaks water from light rain to a heavy downpour.   I've been asked by several clients to start a marketing business, I did marketing videos for them pro-bono over the past few years and they think I'd be great to do it professionally.  So the truck may have drones, laptops, cameras, and video production gear.  Everything is in Pelican cases, but I'm sure something will get wet such as paperwork or a backpack like I have experienced before.   The rest of the time this truck will be used for long trips towing a travel trailer, so I'd think a tonneau cover can also help if I'd like to equip the truck with bed rails to haul mountain bikes or a kayak.  I am even considering a topper if that would be best for the combined marketing/video/event production business & RVing use the truck will see.
    • Thank you.  I ended up passing on that truck, it was $29k with 99k miles and local to me (Illinois).  Played that game once before, passed a much better condition vehicle for one that was closer.  $10k in engine work and $6k in transmission work later, it never drove right, and by that point the age & mileage made it worth close to nothing.  I now remind myself, a plane ticket and an Uber is a lot cheaper than buying the local truck with issues and having buyer's remorse.   Now looking at this for $26k: https://southernwholesale.net/vdp/23915469/Used-2021-GMC-Sierra-1500-SLT-Crew-Cab-Short-Box-2WD-for-sale-in-Trussville-AL-35173 And AutoCheck looks good: https://autocheck.dealercarsearch.com/Default.aspx?VIN=EPWlh9Ow3ceghogyxJFSf4bAycMno2xr4%2fK1GUasMDw%3d&DealerId=25052   This one from Carmax is high ($32k), but some people swear by the Maxcare warranty: https://www.carmax.com/car-detail/27952269   And this one for $33k seems insanely high priced, but it got a new engine at 120k, and no mention of transmission work except for fluid changes: https://www.alejandrocars.com/inventory/2021-gmc-sierra-1500-127941   Just trying to not repeat my first used car purchase, being so underwater I had to sell it to a high school w/vocational shop class because nobody would buy a recently repaired lemon.
