Advice on transmission and or oil cooler for towing

Recommended Posts

My old Sierra had a small transmission cooler and oil cooler, both mounted in front of the radiator.

My trailer is only slightly over 5000 pounds do you think I should put them in my 2015?

Seems like the hardest part would be removing the grill to somehow mount them. Then I guess rubber tubing spliced into the lines that go into the radiator today.

Any advice on whether it's worth it,  and where others have purchased aftermarket coolers and what to look for is greatly appreciated.

The truck has the 5.3 L gas engine.

From what I've read, the factory tranny coolers on these trucks are very good.  Improvements are had from a lower transmission cooler thermostat and tweaking the fan settings.

I haven't had the chance to tow with mine yet, but I find it runs almost as cool as my last truck (Escalade EXT, 6L80E transmission), and I had replaced the factory cooler with a monster transmission cooler without a bypass thermostat.

I have the HD AUX Transmission cooling system (KNP code) on mine and the highest temp I’ve seen was about 160, usually running around130-150 if I can believe the “gauge”. My 2008 Avalanche would run at 175-210 range in the summer. So I am going to agree with @Nitrousbird that these are pretty good.
