Door switch doesn't work with door open

I have a 2005 LLY Silverado ext cab. Recently I noticed that I was finding my driver side door unlocked in the morning and was sure I had locked it upon exit. I can lock and unlock both doors from the drivers side switch only when the driver side door is closed. When I exit the truck my usual routine is to push the lock switch as I close the door, but the switch is dead when the drivers door is open, the fob only locks this door when the door is closed but does work with the fob. even more recently I think the dome light does not come on when this drivers door is open. I pulled the switches and cleaned them but it didnt help. Why would everything work only when door is closed?
