lost to a 350

today before leaving school .. i seen my buddy casey we both pull cattle and all sorts of stuff with are trucks, and he was in his moms 97 350 2x4 350 extended cab....

well i asked him if he wanted to run them.... i knew he had a slight advantage cause of 2 wheel drive but... BY GOD he flew past me like he had some blue juice!!!!

i beat him off the line and i reached about 20 and then he caught up and kept on passing.... i had no chance..

i got a 2001 extended cab z71 lt 4x4 short bed ... with 265/75

could anyone give me an explanation why i lost so bad?? are 350 that strong compared to the newer 5.3 that are supposed to have more horsepower ???

i must have missed something here... i shouldnt have raced him because of my transmission has been acting funny every know and then but everyone is telling me it is my imagination.. so here in about a day or so i am taking it to get serviced ...., but anyhow everything was running good under 210 and everything and still got my azz smoked !!!! lol

oh well i guess i better go pick on a dodge next time or a ford 5.4

yep.. my 350 hoe, smokes my mom's 5.3 they probably weigh about the same.. she has 4 doors, i have 2, she has 2 wheel drive, i have 4 wheel drive. then again I have duals.. not sure if that helps or not. hehe

You should have won IMO.Maybe the extra weight of the 4x4 hurt you.A gen 3 sbc should outrun a 350 vortec.Because a gen 3 delivers it's power up top and more smoothly their is a common misconception that the older trucks are faster.The F-body crowd has had this debate many times.The LT1 cars feel stronger but the LSI cars are a consistent 1/2 a second faster at the track.Same thing applies with the trucks.Gear ratio might have something to do with it also.If you drag race two identically geared,same weight,tranny the newer truck will win.Flame away

Yup....My 92 (not even Vortec) will run right with my 02 4wd right up to 60. The newer Vortec 350s run stronger than my 92 does...Good running trucks out of the box....especially with a stick.

I could whip the '91 350 FI my dad used to have! Both are reg cab 4x4 short bed, same tire size and both had K&N drop ins. And my truck is a 4.8L, I have never tried a vortec 350 though!

I have a 97 vortec 350 and my dad has a 02 5.3,I smoke his as* off the line and keep pullin and pullin.He can not touch me.The 350s are bad as* engiones,I dont care what anyone says about them.great low end torque and good hp.But there is always room for improvment.The sam egoes for the 5.3 but in my opinion the 5.3 dont have enough lowend torque,but the hp is great.

A better comparison would be up against a 6.0,considering it's alot closer in size to your 350 than a 5.3.I have owned both and would bet money the 6.0 would kill the 350 vortec easily.I have owned 4 350 vortecs and 2 vehicles with 6.0 and the 6.0 feels much stronger.I would even put my 6.0 4.10 cargo van up against the 8.1 HD I used to have in a drag race.There is nothing wrong with the 350 vortec,they just don't make the power the gen 3 sbc do.

aww well it was all for fun...

a few days ago i got under my truck and i noticed my muffler is dented up and has or seems to have a hole on top of it cause there is some black stuff down the muffler..

that could have been anohter factor.. of why he beat me so bad in the mid to top range???/

also i was getting 16 17

now i am on 15.7 i wanna cry

oh well like i said before it was fun...

also would tow haul mode help me the next time we race..??

he wants me to race his 4.8 its reg cab 2x4 will he kill me ?? or do you think we will be tied?? or would i beat the reg cab 2 wheel drive??? im am just wondering before i start running my mouth ... you know it sucks eating your own words

That 4.8 in a reg cab will pretty much smoke you in a Z71. They are pretty quick.

He!! the 4.3 (V6) in my 02 reg cab will hang with the 5.3 in the Z71. I couldn't tell you which one is actually faster, because I don't let others drive my trucks , and I can't drive both at the same time....But it's pretty close.

My 2500HD w/6.0 and 5spd 4x4 will hold dead nuts with a 350 pickup.. Our 2500 6.0 2wd 5spd shop truck will absolutely rape a 350... That truck is the quickest truck I've ever driven. Get it into 2nd, 3rd, 4th and that truck will rip.. The power gear is 3rd you take it from 20mph to 60-65 and it will tach out quick.. I can hold with my buddies 8.1 6spd 4x4 pickup no problems...

It all comes down to driver too!

Stock for stock, upon initial launch I'd put the old 350 ahead of you easily. Once at speed and running higher into the RPM range is where the new LS1 derived engines show their strength. As ARE has illustrated, the LT1 vs. LS1 crowd has had this discussion repeatedly. The LT1 "feels" faster because of it's stronger, down low torque. The LS1 doesn't because it's torque and HP curve are a little higher, but are long and smooth. No surging, no sudden impacting and the commensurate drop off like the old 350's when they get to a higher RPM and simply run out of breath. The new Vortec's don't have that issue, they'll run strong all the way to fuel cutoff.

Also you never mentioned gearing. If that 97 is running around with a 3.73 or 4.10 gear and you're running a 3.42 you are definetely at a mismatch from a dig.

LOL~ A dent in you muffler unless huge won't make much difference. The black soot you see is a normal by-product of combustion and has NO affect.

Raced the wife in her 99 yukon 350 vortec and my 99Z71 5.3 extcab. Took her off the line and pulled away. The rear end gearing difference is nothing, 3.42 vs 3.73, not really noticeable. Up top the 5.3 is awesome. 350 can't touch it!
