Regear transfer case??

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am currently working on a 2002 GMC SIERRA 4x4 and I have 3” body lift and 3” suspension leveling kit problem is when I slow down I hear gear lash as if the tires are trying to overcome the front. Sound is coming from transfer case area I think. My question is if I re gear the differentials to 4.56 as recommended by my local off-road guys, do I need to regear the transfer case as well??

Unless you have four wheel drive engaged when this is occurring, it is unrelated. Regearing transfer cases is not something you do.

If you are hearing whine, on deceleration only, there is a chance that your rear axle carrier bearing is worn out.

No, you only have to re-gear the front and rear diff's to the same ratio.

Yeah, you'd need a completely different design for a transfer case to be able to re-gear it, as it just has a sun-gear, so it only is either direct (1:1, 2/4Hi) or some ratio based on the sun gear (4Lo).  I suppose someone could make a different sun gear setup that would be a slightly different ratio.
