ABS Computer Module Died!!

Recommended Posts

I have to replace my ABS computer module. I want to do this myself and thought that since this appears to be a common problem with '99 GM trucks, that a few of you may have already done this.

Can someone detail the steps necessary? The local dealership said that it was as easy as unplugging, removing the old one, installing the new one, and then plugging the new one back in.

Any and ALL feedback will be appreciated!!!!

It's tricky, I put a TORX bit in a regular 1/4" ratchet and 1/4" socket so I could reach in there.

Be sure to clean out the screws and the module real good! It's bad if the screws strip. My screws stripped, so I had to lay under the truck for 2hrs with a Dremel and flex shaft attachment to grind off the screw heads.

Shawn,

Thanks for the info! When I did a search, I found a post from someone that said to make sure and bleed the brakes afterwards. Is this a necessary step? Does the computer module connect to the brake fluid system in addition to the electrical hook-up??? Or is it just an un-hook and re-hook operation?

WOW!!! :lol::lol::lol:

I did some internet searching on this ABS issue and it is AMAZING how widespread this problem is. I cannot believe that GM would continue to make us consumers pay to fix what is obviously a VERY DEFECTIVE component.

I am definitely on a mission now. I plan to contact GM Customer Service and NHTSA.

Unbelievable..............

Yep, me too. Mine went out a while back as well. $700-$900 to fix is pretty ridiculous for a little electronic part. I did find a junk yard that sells them refurbed for $225 with a 100 day warranty. I'd just as soon do without ABS for now, didn't work all that well anyway IMO.

I'm sure me and a lot of others will want to know if you find anything else out.

You don't need to bleed the brakes as long as you don't disconnect the brake lines. That's the whole reason I had so much FUN under the truck!!! I didn't want to remove the brake lines. You can remove the computer from the ABS unit simply by unplugging it and removing the 4 TORX screws on top. If you disconnect any brake lines to the modulator, then you'll have to tow the truck to a dealer and pay them to bleed the ABS modulator with their Tech II scan tool.

I wanted this to be a completely 100% DIY project, so I went to great lengths to avoid disconnecting brake lines.

You can get it fixed under warranty if you're still covered. I wasn't. I would have liked for it to be a recall, but I doubt it'll ever happen since your brakes work fine without ABS, and ABS isn't a government mandated safety item.

I ordered the computer module yesterday and will install this weekend. I lifted the truck up last night and looked at how difficult it might be. I had a #20 (#15?) torx bit and used a 1/4" ratcheting wrench and was able to access all 4 screws and break them loose. I can see where this would be a nightmare if you stripped these screws. I was lucky that they were all clean

Just curious, how much did the module cost, if you don't mind saying?

$430 delivered!

Pulled in an old favor that was owed to me!! However, I did find it today on GMPartsDirect.com for $397.84!! I guess I am going to have to tell my source that he still owes me a favor!!!

I guess I got real lucky, got mine for $53 shipped on Ebay, pulled from an 02 Avalanche with 16k miles. I think it should last, because the module appears slightly redesigned from the one from my 99.

This is just great.

Everytime I come in here now and see the problems you guys have with your trucks, mine starts acting up. Stop it!!!!

UPDATE:

Received the ABS module today and installed it tonight. Once I had the tools laid out and the truck up in the air, it only took about 20 minutes to remove the old one and install the new one. The biggest pain was trying to figure out how to remove the main connection.

I used a #20 torx bit and a 1/4" ratcheting wrench (Craftsman) on the 4 screws. They all came out and went back in with ease.

Don't hesitate to do this job yourself even if you have minimal wrenching skills!! :fume:
