“Service Trailer Brake Controller” Light comes on intermittently

I have a 2015 Silverado LS with the integrated trailer brake controller and have been getting a “Service Trailer Brake Controller” light intermittently.  I tow with my truck about once a month, nothing major.  I noticed it was doing it in the rain at first, then it started doing it intermittently all the time but without a trailer connected, never with the trailer connected.  Now it does it all the time, even with a trailer and it makes me nervous to pull the trailer.  If anyone can help that would be great!

I'd start by checking in the receiving plugs on the bumper, if tabs are bent and touching it could cause a short but when you plug the trailer in they bend out and fit the plug normally. Even if there is a bunch of corrosion in there it could change voltage signals.
