07 Tahoe door lock rod doesn't stay connected

Hello all, 

Haven't found any info on the 'net about this - discovered that the door lock rod on my son's 07 Tahoe driver's side door was disconnected from the lock, in that the retainer clip (which has a red plastic piece affixed to it) is not staying affixed to the lock cylinder.  I attempted to re-attach, but it falls off easily.  There are no prongs of any kind that I can see which would hold the metal part tight onto the lock cylinder.   I do not know if it is a problem with the clip, or the cylinder itself (perhaps missing some prongs of some kind).  I hate to bring to a dealer for what appears to be an easy fix.  I just don't know what to fix, and can't find info on same.  Thanks in advance!

for my '04 sierra, the end pieces that the rod goes into have a plastic piece that acts as both a bushing (it covers the inside of the hole that the rod goes through), as well as acts as the retaining clip (it has a plastic piece that snaps onto the rod).

 

Maybe the plastic piece is either missing or broken/damaged, as on my truck, there is no chance of them coming off.

 

You just put the rod through the hole, then rotate the plastic piece so the clip snaps onto the rod and done.
