Just wondering but i have a little story from today.  It didnt really bother me but it made me stop and think

 

So i get to work today (6:30am).  Me and my manager are talking and she says nice truck and i say thanks.  She said is it your dads.  I was like WTF?  I waslike nope its mine and its paid off too.  

 

I guess people see a 22 yr old with a nice truck and they assume its not theirs?  I get wierd looks all the time.  Screw them i worked my arse off for it and it was well worth it.

 

Oh well anyone else have any stories like this?

Way too many folks see what they want and assume that the world is like they want it to be, or has been for them.  

 

BTW; I have folks that think my truck is my grandsons. devil:

Here is one similar.

 

Back in late 1986 (I think). I had a 1986 Monte SS that was just a few months old (I know, they are slow, but that thing looked goooood!).

 

I took it to the local Buick dealer to check out the 1987 Buick GN with the intercooler. Remember those?!?!  I parked right in front of the glass at the showroom. I had jeans/tshirt/sneakers, the usual (I was 20 years old at the time).

They had a GN on the floor all shined up. As I was checking it out, salesmen were chatting off to the side, not giving me the time of day. I had to ask the receptionist to send one of the blockheads over.

From the get-go it was obvious he didn't want to give me the time of day. I was asking about the car and purchasing options (GM plan).

After he blows me off, I go outside and open the door to the SS. The salesman gave me a double take from inside the showroom and his face said "I just blew a sale!"

 

It was classic

Blow them off and take it as a compliment.  I've worked hard all my life and I deserve to have some nice things.  Granted my truck isn't paid for yet, but it's probably one of the nicest in the lot at work, and my payments are very affordable to me...

 

I appreciate it when people compliment me on my "stuff"...

 

I know where you are coming from though, because I'm sure your boss wishes she could have a truck like yours, but she probably can't manage her money well enough to afford it.  Maybe you could help her out a little...  LOL!!!

Actually shaners she has a very nice mustang.  Newer convertible.  And actually there are going to be upgrading to a new truck (chevy) from their current 1990 soon and she was asking me some questions.

 

My thing is people assume things to much

Yeah I know how you feel.  I worked for my truck, saved up a ton of money, and paid for my truck completely with my own money, and I paid it off the day I bought it.  But I don't let it get to me too much, I just take pride in the fact that I did a good job saving money and was able to buy my truck on my own.

they annoy me too.  i will be the first to admit that i have stereotyped, but some stereotypes (especially racial, etc..) really piss me off

Being a farmer, it is unbelieveable how we are sterotyped.  At school I get quite a bit of it and I see a few on here from time to time.  A few examples:

 

All farmers are dumb  (Graduated HS with a 4.0 GPA, in a premier engineering college, most of the smartest people I know are farmers who didn't have the chance to attend college)

 

Farmers smell bad all the time (Yes at times I do, comes with the job, but I do use this thing called a shower daily, I clean up quite well)

 

Every person who lives in the country is a hillbilly (As I grow older I realize more and more live in the city too, I'd also like someone to come here to my part of the world, if we live like hillbillys I'll eat my hat)

 

Farmers are freeloaders on society (It may look that way with the farm bill, but I'm not going to get into that at this time)

Every single one of us has sterotyped at one time or another, to say you haven't is a huge lie.  All a guy can do is do his damndest to show how things really are and how that stereotype does not fit.

JP i must say i have never thought of a farmer in anyway you mentioned (not saying you accused me but i am just saying).  I have alot of respect for farmers.  I put them in the firemen/policemen/teacher category

 

As for hillbilly screw that i dont care.  I drive a pickup call me a hillbilly its a compliment

Yeah JP-being from West Virginia, I hear this one alot along with the  same tired old "inbreeding" jokes.  And heck I live right outside a fairly good sized town.  Frankly from what I've seen-most of the folks in West Virginia and farmers all over  live a cleaner lifestyle than alot of city people.  

 

Hey-I can walk out of my house at night and hear crickets and owls-not gunshots and sirens!!  I can leave my truck unlocked in my driveway. I can drive around with a rifle in the back window of my truck and noone bats an eye or tries to arrest me.  I try not to let stereotyping bother me but it does get under my skin a little.  Heck some of the biggest offenders are my outta state relatives!  :plainsmile:

 

What the heck-So I'm a dang hillbilly!!  I love every minute of it!

Yeah, I'm a hillbilly too.  So what.     And I don't know anyone that is married to another relative.  

 

Pretty much nothing bothers me.  A few little things annoy me, but I'm a pretty easy going, laid back kind of person.

That's not true anymore Paco, Now trucks are for Yuppies and Gen X'ers...

 

I remember when cloth seats and carpet was an option no-one would even consider in a truck!!!  Now Vinyl and rubber is unheard of, and probably 75% of all trucks have power windows etc...  

 

I complained to the dealer about my '97 F250 shifting way too soft (mushy).  He told me if it shifted hard like a truck should, sales would plummet...  it's a sad thing  

 

Ryan I'm very proud of the fact that you were able to work hard and pay-off your truck.  That shows alot of responsabillity.  You should be damn proud of yourself too!!!

Ah yes, have lost track of the "did you play basketball" comments(6'5 230).  I can relate to the old dealership blowing off the younger customer who comes in in casual clothing.  Had it happen a time or 2.  Definitely have stereotyping as a daily concern.  In my business it's referred as the taboo term "profiling".  And of course being in lawn enforcement, a lot of people have their own stereotypes as well.  That's why I don't mention much about work and usually don't say what I do unless asked or it will be a help to someone.  But 1 guy I rode with while doing some volunteer policework gave me something that I use as my rule for work, treat others like you'd want your family treated.  And another 1 I always try to do is be fair but firm.  I guess life all comes down to being able to look yourself in the mirror and be satisified at the end of a day.
