Steering wheel control install

Has anyone installed the steering wheel controls to use with an aftermarket head-unit? I know there is an adapter module you can get from jpcustoms to make the buttons programmable to use with any IR remote controlled headunit. One question I have is do I need the harness that goes from the wheel controls to the stereo, or can I wire the adapter module directly into the small harness on the wheel controls?
