SUV subwoofer Installation

Where have some of you guys mounted subs in your SUV's? I am debating between just upgrading the existing 8" or trying to figure out where to mount some bigger subs.

Is your truck the old body style? If so, Q-Logic makes replacement lower panels for the rear doors that enable a 10 inch speaker in each.

If not, you will probably have to go custom. Should not be too hard for any stereo shop to make some similar panels or a side mount flush style box to fit you needs.

You will find a good aftermarket 10 inch sub and amp set up will take of your needs nicely.

btw, if you have an extended cab you could get a box and put them under the rear seat.

You can get them from Circuit City, but I would reccomend just doing an online search for Q-Logic. They also make kick pannels for alot of vehicles. I have been very pleased with every product I have personally used or installed on customers cars from Q-Logic. Excellent product and great sound when installed correctly.

My truck is new body style. Those boxes that you showed were originally what I was thinking about. Does anybody know if a 10" will fit in place of the factory 8"?

It could be made to fit but the air space required for the 10 inch sub would be way wrong. Not to mention the factory amp would not have the power to properly run the bigger sub. Describe to me type (fill, low end punch, rock type bass drum thump) and how much bass you would like and I'll give you some recomendations. I need types of music you listen to also.

I mainly listen to heavy metal and classic rock. Some groups are Metallica, Linkin Park, Puddle of Mudd, Godsmack. The types of group that are heavy with guitar and drums. I want something that is very clear and accurate, but I don't want to be heard coming down the road. I am interested in sound quality the most.

I have a 12" Cerwin Vega A.I. series that I have used before in a sealed box and really liked how it sounded, I was planning on installing this in my Pontiac Trans Am.

Well your tastes run similar to mine so.......................

I would go with a small sealed 10 inch sub set up. A single truck style box will provide the easiest fit and maximize you SUV storage. If you can fit the amp under a seat that would finish it out nicely with a fairly stealthy install. The larger interior volume of a SUV provides deeper bass extention in the cab making a 10 inch sub sound as "deep" as a 12 inch normally would, while still providing the punchy response of a 10 incher.

If you don't mind spending big money, a local stereo shop can make your rear doors into enclosures like the prior pictures. Not really hard to do, but labor and material intensive. Not an newbie project, you can make a real mess.

I have 2 Comp VR 10"s in a custom made box in my Tahoe. One of my friends owns a stereo shop. He doesn't carry Kicker products so I bought the speakers and brought them to him. He made the box and installed the speakers so all I had to do was put it in the truck and plug it in. Mine has a tailgate so the Q-forms weren't an option. I wil get a pic and post it later.

I have always had good luck with Cerwin Vega, so I will probably look into their 10" sealed units. Does anybody happen to know how much volume is in the current 8" unit?

A suburban has a different shap on that side because of the rear AC, but you might be able to do something similar.

I am 100% positive there is not enough air space in the factory sub box for a 10 inch sub. You will need to do some type of enclosure to get the bass you are wanting.

99-2door thats a decent looking set up you have. Couple of pointers.... take the amp bridge and paint the outer wings to better match the amps will help alot, some chrome grills for the subs will help tie them in with the amps, a top cover just covering the top or top and rear of box in grey vinyl matching your interior will finish out the install perfectly. You can also make a cover out of a larger piece of ABS plastic then paint to match. Its too bad the box maker didn't use a matching carpet but he did do a nice semi-flush box contour.

when I first put the amps in I planned on painting the bridge piece partly black. Just one of those things I haven't got around to yet. I had the option to get the matching carpet but it would have increased the cost of the box by 3x I told him just to put the normal stuff. I may replace it with the carpet from the back wall of the cab from some ext. cab trucks to make it match. Be a lot cheaper that way.
