2020 sierra 2500 SLE to AT4 (looks wise) advice

Id love to just go ahead and purchase an AT4 but its a little out of my price range and its really difficult to find a base AT4 gasser. I think i have found a solution. I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on an SLE with a center console, 20" wheels, white with the gas engine. Its a loaded SLE. I'm going to have the front and rear bumpers wrapped white and put black leather in it. Im not a fan of the tan accents on the at4. The one thing that i'm not sure of is how the chrome grill will look with the color matched bumpers. I really like the dark look of the at4s front grill but i'm not sure if its going to be easier to have it wrapped or painted or just swap the grill out. I'm also going to paint the wheels with the black pattern that the at4 has. How would you guys go about the grill issue?

You're just trying to make it look like an AT4? Or you're going to make it an AT4? Because the grill is the last thing to worry about. Its all about the suspension, the rear differential, the transfer case etc. It would cost a ton more to make an SLE an AT4 than it would to buy an AT4. Or are you just trying to make others think its an AT4 when its not?

AT4 HD has no suspension changes.  Only the 1/2 ton does.  OP is looking at HD.

I’m not trying to make anyone think it’s an at4. I just like the look of the color matched bumpers and the black accents on the wheels. The question in regards to the grill was just a matter of asking people’s personal opinions on how it would look.. I’m not a fan of the Denali color matched with all of the chrome. I prefer the sportier look. The sle has substantially less chrome on the grill so I’m not sure of the cost of wrapping or replacing would be worth while. I need to find a photo shop expert to render a picture of one. Probably easiest to take an at4 and impose the sle grill onto it. Anyone have photoshop skills??

I believe the AT4 HD and any other HD trim with the X31 package are basically the same, suspension wise, correct?

Correct.  AT4 on the HD is all appearance.

If you did just the bumpers and left the grille, you'd end up with it kinda Denali-like, so color matched with chrome grille.

I would ask this on the grille.  Do you like the AT4's black with chrome insert grille?  Or would you rather have body color grille?  If you didn't want chrome, you could get a base grille that has black bars and just chrome border and wrap the chrome body color.  Or, you could just wrap the SLE grille and leave the bars chrome.  GM does sell the AT4 grille as an accessory as well too, 84471763 is the #.  You can always do the AT4 grille and just wrap the sides and the top white, leave the gloss black/chrome in the center.

I may just order the grill. I don’t want to mess with much once take delivery of the truck. Leather bumpers grill will get done before I take it. Wheels will get done when I put 35s on and level it. Thanks for the help fellas

Trim levels on 2020 HD Sierra.

Base Sierra

SLE

SLT

AT4

Denali

On HD base sierra, sle and slt:

X31         X31 Off-Road Package, includes (JHD) Hill Descent Control, (NZZ) skid plates, Off-Road suspension, Twin-tube Rancho shocks and X31 hard badge.  (Can only be added to 4wd trucks.)

on AT4 and Denali X31 is standard, and includes

X31 Off-Road Package, includes (JHD) Hill Descent Control, (NZZ) skid plates, Off-Road suspension and Twin-tube Rancho shocks

Lots of other things are standard on AT4 that are not standard on SLE.

For starters SLE is 2wd (4wd optional) on AT4 and Denali 4wd and autotrac are standard

SLE 4wd is the non-autotrac version, but it can be ordered with the autotrac version

(2020 is first year for autotrac on the HD)

Could probably source the AT4 grill and bumpers thru parts or accessories to add to an SLE.

And the signature red tow hooks....

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
