2000 Sierra ign switch/key cyl timing?

My friend brought me his 2000 Sierra 1500 and couldn't turn the key. I pulled the trim pieces so I could get to the little release hole to remove the cylinder from housing. Hard as i tried the release wouldn't depress and the cyl wouldn't budge. I removed the entire housing to get it to release it from the back part of the housing. I pulled the ignition switch and rotated the gear manually to check the switch's operation and it was fine. I put everything back Together and with the new key and cyl the will now turn back to accy and forward 1 click to the on position but thats it. 

Maybe Imoved the gears out of proper timing? Does anyone know 

A procedure for that.????
