Beefing up the brakes

Recommended Posts

Posted

As some of you may remember, I posted before that I am very unhappy with the brakes on my 1999 K-1500 Z-71. I have all but decided to do something about it this winter. I am very seriously considering the Hyroboost kit and / or a rear disc conversion from TSM MFG.

The rear disc conversion uses Chevy rotors (donor vehicle unkown) and Caddy calipers (to retain parking brake feature). However, I would like to use GM truck components from the new style Chevy/GMC. Does anyone know if the caliper brackets on the nbs trucks are welded to the axle tube or bolt-on? Also, does anyone know for a fact if the bolt pattern of the axle tube flange (studs that mount the backing plate) are the same as on the C/K line of trucks - talking about 1/2-ton 10-bolt axles here.

Here are the links to the items above.

Before changing anything, consider going to higher performance friction materials. Costs about same as OEM stuff.

Praise Dyno Brake (PDB) Stage I or II. II"s recommend changing to cyro/slotted rotors.

DO NOT get drilled rotors, as they will crack.

PDB friction materials are about 38% higher in co-efficient of friction than OEM. OEM is Raybestos HD last time checked (they all sell to OEM and repackage...Bendeix, Raybestos, etc).

Have tried just about all of them and like PDB best. Performance Friction comes close in ultimate stopping power, but are more race than street...as they only work well when hot...when cold...almost no brakes.
