Center wheel caps

One of the center wheel caps is messed up so decided to replace it but owners manual says to keep the cap with wheel. Anyone know why this is? It just snaps on so it seems they should all be made to the same dimensions as well as the wheels. Can't believe I would have to the cap and wheel together as a matched set.

Think maybe they are saying just make sure you have a cap in the wheel to keep debris (water, dirt, dust)from getting into the hub assembly?

 

They sell factory replacement caps for almost all of their wheels.
