Gauge Cluster - Real Working Gauges?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm new to the GM world, and had a question about my '00 Silverado gauge cluster. Are the gauges actual "real" gauges that monitor actual temperatures/pressures etc?

Or are they more the "idiot light" type where it's an on/off type of monitoring?

The gauges are not analog and connected directly to the sensor like they were in the old days, but rather the sensor is connected to one of the computers, and then that computer forwards the data to the computer in the instrument panel, which then runs the stepper motor in the panel to turn the needle to the right spot.

The gauges are fairly accurate (well, as least the ones on my truck seem to be, comparing the gauge value with the value my edge insight cts displays).  The oil pressure gauge might be artificially boosted a little on the low end, so reduce customer panics about low oil pressure.
