i was wonering if you need to drill holes to mount aftermarket speakers in an 01 chevy ext cab and how manyof you amp the speakers in the doors also how would a free air sub sound behind the back seat?

I think you do. Friend of mine put Boston components through out his truck. He had to use some supplied self-tappers and even cut some metal away for them to fit in the stock openings.

I have MB Quart (components) in the front doors, and Infinity/Infiniti (whatever) in the rear doors. Neither required any cutting, and while self tapping screws are great, a lot of care should be taken when using them. It's pretty easy to poke a hole in that brand new $500 speaker.

Mark your holes, pre-drill them (about half the diameter of your self-tapping screws), and then mount the speaker with the self-tapping screws.

As far as free-air subs, I have never heard one that sounded decent enough to put in anything I owned.

There is quite a bit of space behind that seat, but keep in mind that when you lift the seat bottom, the base of the seat back moves toward the rear of the cab, effectively halving the amount of room back there.

You might be able to fit some 8" subs back there in truck boxes, but I doubt it.

Best bet is to just bite the bullet, and get one under the seat, or get a JL Audio Stealth box that replaces your center-console with a 10" sub....But those are kinda pricey.

You are going to lose bass when installing aftermarket mids and tweets.

Reason being that they are purpose designed for mid range, and high range.

The stockers were designed to put out all across the sound spectrum, and while they do their job, the sound quality suffers because of it.

If you go with aftermarket mids and tweets, you will be amazed by the things you now hear that you couldn't before, you will also feel the hole in the music where the bass needs to be.

Here is a post with my stuff in it.

Yup, my mids and tweets are amped.

I don't really remember now. I will look for my reciept tomorrow, and let you know if I find it.

I do know it was under $200. Without the subs, of course.

I want to say around $129 + tax.

I ran wires right to the speakers. Also as far as boxes go the JL audio stealtboxes are sweet. If money is an issue look into the JL Audio vantage boxes. Same idea as the stealth box but its made of super thick abs. The sound and design quality are top shelf. I have a sub thump box in my truck and the workman ship and sound quality are terrible. I would not recomend that box to anyone. As soon as JL has a box for my truck the other is going to the dump!!
