My first Multi-pro tailgate. 2020 Sierra.

Yay!  It opens ok, with or without the remote and folds down nicely and all that. It's obviously a heavy mofo because the first time I went to close it the gate is supposed to have the lift assist, right? Dang, it sure didn't feel like it. Maybe it does, but just being heavier than a regular gate has it feeling different.

But every time I go to close it, it goes part way up and there's like a popping or clunking noise. It doesn't seem to deter it from closing at all, but it keeps making a noise every single time. There's nothing in the way that I can see, but maybe it's something I can't see.

Is this a normal thing with the Multi-pro or is it abnormal? My old regular gate truck didn't make any noise and it had the lift assist too. I did a search here, but got no results.

Just wondering.

Just googled looking for an answer on the same. . . Mine makes a high pitch squeal right before the latch makes contact when closing. . . I've lubed everything with no change. . . Sounds like it is coming from inside the tailgate on the RH side. . ?  Very distinct squeak / squeal like metal on metal spring detent / contact. . ?  Can't believe no one else has chimed in with help or the same problem. . ?  Bob in Key Largo. . .

Sorry guys my gate works perfectly with no pop, squeek or squeel. I think we are talking about 2 different problems here. 2020SierraDenali it sounds like the llft assist is broken and making the popping sound. DenalDavis and Dylan the lift assist could be squeekng inside the tailgate. Dylan what year is your truck and how many miles?

Fixed... The torsion bar is making the loud pop or ping sound when closing the tailgate.  The rotation of the hinges hangs just enough to pop free and reverberate noise (from rust, corrosion or dirt) where the tailgate hinge rotates.  Lubricate the tailgate hinges, working in the lubrication by moving the tailgate up and down and the noise will stop.  The torsion bar, from the hinges, really carries the sound.
