I'm looking at buying a used 00-02 GMC Sierra Ext Cab with all the goodies (SLT package, z-71, etc). Hoping for less that 50k miles. What problems should i look out for when i check them out? Also, what other GMC/Chevy truck forums are out there?

The first is obvious, start it when it's ice cold, so you can judge the engine knock, make sure the tail gate cables are'nt ready to break, that the 4wd drive works, make sure your slip yoke is ok, feel for slap when you step on the gas, the latch holding the hood is'nt all ready rusted where it mounts to the hood, make sure the parking brake works,

bring a scan tool to check for codes and make sure you get really good tow insurance.

40-45K the truck will be needing brakes, now I've heard some of these guys getting huge milage out of the brakes, but all 4 wheels were ready at 47k on mine, with one pad on the back hitting the sensor. The pads alone will set you back about 150 bucks, and all 4 rotors will need to be cut, mine all had a ridge where the pad did'nt ride, so they looked like wide u's. The backs just barely made it, and there 100 bucks each.

Next brake job will be padd and rotors, unless by some miracle someone steals the truck.

jma4--don't let sjspor scare you------i have over 80000 trouble free miles on my truck--yes it is a 2wd but still on all original equipment such as brakes, coolant rotors, trans fluid--the only thing replaced so far is tires----i do regular maintenance myself--always checking everything--yes i will be doing major fluid replacement at 100000 when it gets time too--but i drive mine like i stole it every day--no knocks or rattles--so lets say i have been very lucky or i have gotten one of the best trucks ever to come down the assembly line--i give gmc a big :puke::lol: ---but that is my own personal opinion :D

What to look for hmmm, how about what I have done.

Well my truck is a 2000 5.3l extended all the goodies 80,000 KM ( not miles)

So what have i done.

1. Transfer case ( Owner error ) Previous owner cracked outer magnesium case, covered under warranty.

2. Hmm Major Accident ( *hole with bald tires and no brains fault)

3. had switch for 4 wheel drive go ) $80 ( warranty )

4. Brakes ( Front ) NEVER TURN A ROTOR ( YOUR JUST WASTING YOUR TIME)

Nothing else I can think of, I drive mine fair I guess, I squeel a little, I speed a little. But to tell ya the truth it seems tough as nails. Mine knocks a little, but a lot of cars do that when cold ( -30 Celcius will do these things) I would also check trainy fluid and engine oil. check the suicide doors as well ( if there hard to get to latch they need adjustment or they may be bent.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOU NEW TRUCK ( IF YOUR LIKE ME YOUR ALREADY DRIVING IT )

By the way someone should make a GM-TRUCKS.COM STICKER

Look at the links to the left. The one that says click here for decals. I ordered mine last week. Don't know what took so me long.

I replaced my brake pads at 80K miles, I'm not exactly easy on them either :D

I agree, the rotors on these new trucks are not meant to be cut or turned. GM guys who write the service manuals, Dealer techs as well as my parts guys have told me the same thing.

Check the gas gauge, the 99-00 trucks have a common problem with the sending units going bad causing a fluxuating gauge reading.

ABS sensors go out too, check that.

As far as the tailgate cables and other incidentals, those are items to consider when buying ANY used vehicle IMO.

These are the best generation FS trucks GM has produced IMO, I've owned a few

Good Luck!!

Why not? I have always had mine turned about every other brake job or whenever I felt they needed it... You just have to make sure you haven't turned them past the MIN thickness!

If you replace yours at every brake job would you like to sell some of your old rotors? Just kidding LOL!!

That site is ok but this one is better IMO

FSC is good but too slow for me. I like the people here on GM-TC better (though its probably because I know them better). There is also pickuptruck.com but to be honest, due to the maturity level of some members there I will never return.

    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
    • you might read through the info on gmupfitter.com for your truck, to find a good power source.
    • Melling I believe is/was the OEM on the lifters who explored this problem some years ago. The white paper they generated on the topic indicated two items of note when I read it. 1.) They only fail on the switch. Prevent the switch, prevent the failure. 2.) The majority fail due to deposits messing up the timing of that switch. Anyway that's what I got from it.    Mine have always been active, 195K+ now, and my oil maintenance is surgically clean.    Of course this assumes good parts. That is no heat treat issue or machining flaws. I get comfortable that these issues are in the rearview mirror by about 30K. IMHO naturally.
    • Yes, the key seems to be with the half tons that if it has the Z71, then it definitely has the two speed. What got me was that the two speed AND the lower geared towing package option could not be chosen together the last few years unless it was mated up to the 6.2. Want the 3.0 duramax and 3.73 tow gears ... nope, can't get the two speed transfer case ( neighbor son realized that after he had bought his used 3.0 half ton .. where the frick is the low range ? ! ).    I am still unsure which truck series, the half ton or the HD truck that the original poster is referring to for sure other than yes his question is in the HD section of this forum but that doesn't guarantee the question got asked in the right section.
