Last week I placed an order through accessories.chevrolet.com for the offroad lights that install onto the sport bar. I paid for the dealership to install them since electrical work is one of many weaknesses of mine. There was only 1 dealership that showed up on the website for my area. I gave them my truck last night before they closed, after they called earlier in the week and set up an appointment for first thing this morning. I called to find out the status and was told the tech has been working on it all day. Total install cost for the light and required wiring harness was $400. The dealership hourly rate is $175/hour (SoCal, go figure). Doing the math, it's being billed at approximately 2 hours 15 minutes to completely install. At 3:20pm I called to find out if my truck was done. My service writer said the tech has been working on it since 7am, had just spoken to the tech, and was pushing for a 4pm completion. I told them that wouldn't do, and I needed a mode of transportation. They gave me a loaner car. It's now 5pm, and I still haven't heard from the dealership about my truck being done. I have also been told this is the first time anybody at the dealership has installed this GM accessory on a T1. Still, 10 hours for a job that requires 1/5th that is stupid. My truck has only GM Accessories on it (aside from a short antenna and tonneau cover). Before I start calling BS on all of this, I want to take a look at the installation instructions. Does anybody have access to these they can post up in this thread?

It took them 2 days to do the factory lift on my SLT.  Same story, first time they’d ever done it.  Still only charged me for what was quoted though. 

It's frustratingly stupid. I think I'll head down to the dealership tomorrow with my drone and take a peak to see what's going on. The dealership doesn't have a closed garage for service. It's more like a carport. I'll be able to fly nearby and see what's going on. The attached pic is the service department. Both structures on the right and left are the service bays. There's no doors at all. If I hover over the bays on the right, then I can have a direct line of sight on the left. I saw my truck today, and it is in one of the bays on the left.

First time through that sport bar is a bit of a bear.  Actual straight punch time for the 4 or 5 we've done ends up being about 3-4 hours (flat rate so they lost their A$$ on it).  And a different person in our shop installed each one of those, so first time for everyone. 

 

And the guy working your truck probably kept getting pulled off of it to do other crap too.  Depending on size/how many techs, they might not have the ability to leave one guy just on one job for 2-3 hours.

I don't know what the work hours are for the guy working on it, but the shop is open 7am-6pm. I got a call a few minutes ago. They've been working on it for the last hour today (they've only been open an hour). They are experiencing difficulty. I was told it was installed, and they were able to turn the light on and then off, but when they turned it back on it didn't come on. They think the harness may be faulty or there's an issue with the controller. They're ordering another harness. This sounds like it is going to take a few days.

This is turning into a s*** show with a barrel full of monkeys. They located and installed a 2nd wiring harness for the light bar. They were still experiencing the same problems as before. They tried calling me and saying it is what it is, and to come get the truck. I said if it's not 100% functional then the job isn't 100% complete. They've had several other techs take a look, and none of them can figure what's going on. I told them to call GM to figure out what's going on. Apparently they called Baja Designs. Baja Designs told them to change the battery in the remote. The dealership doesn't have the battery, so they went to get one. I was told I'd get a call back in 30 minutes. That was over an hour ago. I'm about to head down to the dealership.

 

Edit: the dealership just called to say they aren't able to complete the job today. They're keeping the truck over the weekend. Hopefully Monday....

Got a call around 12:30 today from the dealership. They said the truck was done. Turns out the problem was the battery in the remote. Why this kit doesn't have a manual switch installed in the truck is perplexing. The only way to turn on/off the light is via a remote that hands from your keys. I wonder if there's a way to get these to work with an auxiliary switch should I go that route? Biggest problem is the 2 strobe features.

 

Negative impressions on this are that it's way too small for the truck. Imo, it should've been bigger. It's both too thin in height and width. The bracket mounting the light to the sport bar is bigger than the side profile of the light. Also, it uses 4 smaller covers instead of 1 big cover, and they aren't that convenient in removing.

 

The positives are the light is bright. It's very bright, like it should be. It also has 2 strobe speeds, but the strobe affect is the same. One setting is just faster than the other. The light cover(s) seems very durable. It's not too difficult to put them on or take them off.

 

Overall, for the money I paid I wouldn't do this again knowing what I know now. However, if your ultimate goal is to have a functional offroad light that mounts to your truck without modifying anything, nor affecting any part of your warranty, then this will work for you. I was able to fit in parking garages with a maximum height of 7 feet. Now the height of my truck is 7 feet 4 inches. For appearance, the light doesn't flow with the truck. While the truck is big, the light seems paper thin and the mounting bracket is big. Aesthetically it doesn't flow with the rest of the truck.

thanks for the honest review.

 

Can you take some pictures from a little higher? Maybe one from the bed to look at how the lights mount and the wiring? Also maybe a higher view from the front? Maybe use a latter.

 

Is the light pattern very focused frontward or is it dispersed to the sides?

Here are some pics you requested. I couldn't find my latter, but I was able to locate my ladder so I could get you a raised front view.

Wiring from the light is run through the light bar, down into the passenger side bed wall so that it goes under the truck, run under the cab, and into the engine bay.

As for illumination, I turned it on a few times last night to check out how the light was projected. I didn't want to annoy my neighbors, so it was brief. From my perspective it was projecting forward, but there was some light scattering out at an angle. When you look at the light bar you'll see the lights are arranged in 4 segments. The lens on both the left and right of each segment are ruined so they scatter light. Thanks for the additional pictures. Very helpful. I do a lot of beach driving and I see a lot of trucks with various lighting systems. I'm interested in mounting one, but there are so many out there, it's tough to choose.

 

One last request and no pressure, but if you get a chance to take a picture with the lights on the next time you are out and about, would be greatly appreciated. The beach season is about over here in the NY region, so I am in no rush to get something, so like I said, no rush.

That may be doable, but not for a bit. I'm headed to Lake Havasu, AZ in about 3 weeks. I suspect there may be a place somewhere between there and San Diego that I might be able to get a good photo for you.

The sports bar is the optimum location for high power offroad lights but when I had them on my truck a CHP officer pulled me over and was going to give me a ticket. I showed him that the wires from the lights were physically disconnected and the lights not operable and he let me go.

 

The CHP is very lax at enforcing the vehicular code these days with regard to modified trucks so it may not be a problem. If I was putting a set on my truck today I would use Nelson connectors.

They can ticket me all they want. I'm in full compliance, as seen in the picture. My lights are fully functional, and will remain so.

I know it's been a few months, but I thought I'd bring this thread back. My saga with the GM Accessories light bar from Baja Designs is still ongoing. If you've been following the thread about auxiliary switches from GM Upfitters then you know I've had a little difficulty getting everything, but I hope that endeavor will be over soon.

The purpose for the auxiliary switches has always been so I could have a wired button on the dash for the offroad lights instead of a key fob. This is the way it was on the last generation of trucks, so I'm disappointed to see that didn't carry over to the T1xx's. I'm pleased to announce that may no longer be the case

I decided to contact Baja Designs about working with them to make a wire harness for the offroad light so I could use the GM Upfitter switch. Their rely was very short and sweet. They already make a wire harness for this application. You can find it at the following link:

    • Can it still be Assembled I?    Stribeck says that we need a certain amount of viscosity under conditions of load and velocity to prevent two surfaces of a know roughness from tearing each other asunder. And we have marketing trying to tell the masses that those two surfaced require less of that commodity due to more exact limits being placed on the same old clearances. We also know that there are limits to how hard something can before it becomes to brittle to be viable and to smooth to 'wet' the surface and that both of those conditions have been known and met since about the Second World War.    That viscosity value shook out at 10 centistokes at 212 F just under a hundred years ago.  Give this a look: [Anton Parr]     What is advertised is the Kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) or that which has been density adjusted but the value we are after is the dynamic viscosity (mPa.s) or true viscosity. You can see that this number is dependent on density thus base stock and temperature. You can also see that an SAE 30 doesn't reach that value in this example. However an SAE 30 that is at the upper end of the SAE 30 range; 12.5 cSt (mm2/s), might. 12.5 * .83 = 10.375 (mm2/s). If you could find an SAE 30 at the upper end these days.   Then there is the complication of viscosity modifiers or VII or VM, whatever you wish to call them. Polymers added to very thin base oils, perhaps 3 to 6 cP oils, that will meet the SAE *W30 spec at 'tested' shear rates and 100 C/212F  target temperature. So a polymer fortified base that is a fraction of the 10 cP requirement Stribeck insist upon.   This could be all well and good if those polymers didn't have two very problematic 'features'. They shear or loose viscosity both 1.) permanently and 2.) temporality. And they do both omitted in the advertised data with the distinct  purpose of deceiving the consumer of the actual operating state of the fluid. I've shown the example of Warren Oils COSTCO 10.91 cSt 5W30 formuation several times where the 100 C HTHS value is 6.9 cP!! That's the temporary shear down and with and SSI or shear stability index of 9.4 cSt. Note the intentional deception in using mixed units?    After a short while that 9.4 cSt oil has a viscosity corrected dynamic value of 7.8 cP. But as the SSI is still within the range of an SAE *W30 whose lower value is 9.3 cSt.    This allows them to continue to call this SAE 16 weight oil a 30 weight, the cake, and still meet the API requirements for fuel efficiency IMPROVEMENT mandated by the EPA. The eating of the cake. By the time you've worn out your motor doing the responsible thing by adhering to the warranty requirements, (the stick), you get deprived of the carrot, wear control. So sad, to bad.   So what can be done? Do I need actually say? [Anton Parr]       Even this must be monitored if the oil is on the low side and the VII an organic or you opt for a 0W40 with an even lighter base oil and more / higher MW VII. (Note the lower density of the 40 weight versus the SAE 30 mono-weight?)    There is another workaround. Temperature. An SAE *W30 run at a bulk temperature of between 180 and 195 F.    Being the belt and suspenders sort I am I do both. Run it cook and run it heavy.    In Part II I'll work the AW package. 
    • So, do I go elbow-deep on this thing or list it for sale and play dumb? Seems to "runs good."   I'm about $1200 away from having: -a rebuilt injector ($300) -a new cat ($250) -a new cat back exhaust (OE style) ($300) -a new AC compressor ($200) -AC refrigerant charge ($150)   In theory, this should rectify the obvious detracting issues from its value and operability. Cold AC with a non-squeaking AC pulley both sounds and feels good. An exhaust that isn't cut/hacked in 17 different places and doesn't vibrate on a crossmember would make it sound and feel less janky. A working cat would help the stink, and will save the earth, but *if and only if* the fuel system is working properly, which would also address the intermittent "rich" CEL.   Heard a good one... CEL for "Rich condition" means you haven't spent enough money on the truck lately, and it's letting you know.   Rebuilding the injector would seem to be the most important part. Replacing the cat would be secondary. I don't think mine is plugged or overly restricted, but it might be a little restricted? I have no good way to tell other than seat of the pants feel. I hate the smell.   The current theory is I have a rich idle problem: A bad fuel pressure regulator, or a leaking injector(s) being the highest probabilities. I already replaced the FPR but that doesn't mean its replacement isn't also bad. It was a new part from Dorman, but the packaging looked like it had been sitting on a shelf for 20 years.   This is the (single) upstream O2 sensor shown at idle. I'm getting a lot of "rich" it seems. Sometimes it stays high like that and doesn't drop down. That makes me think it's processing injector leaks or a partially stuck open injector.     Other times it looks like this. Nice oscillations between rich and lean, which is what I think it should be. Under load and at speed, the oscillations are nice and tight and uniform looking, high and low.     Fuel trims suggest the PCM is compensating pretty hard at idle to pull fuel out. But it's not enough to trip a CEL. Something about slowing to a stop: brake vaccum booster, EGR, or the EVAP purge is delayed, or there's pooled fuel in the intake again that's draining into a cylinder is enough to set the CEL. Of course, in two days of driving, it hasn't set. I was hoping to actually look at the freeze-frame data when it sets. IAT is high because it's idling on an 83 degree day here.  
    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.
