Well these are the choices we're throwing around. Probably more will come to mind when she starts looking around.

 

So what do you guys think?

 

As you can see, we're not GM biased. :D (Sorry guys)

 

If I can ask the Av owner's out there a few questions please.

 

Well, if you have driven, or own any of the vehicles above, I'd appreciate in-put. thanks. :thumbs:

 

 

1. (AV owners) Are you glad you went with the Avalanche?

 

2. (All vehicles) Any problems so far? (Pertaining to engine, drivetrain, etc.)

 

3. (Av owners:)Have you utilised the "re-moval" of the back glass and back seats and etc.? If so, what do you think ( Can you hear that "wind noise"?)

Putting on my unbiased hat.....either the X-Terra or the Av..... I have had Nissans before and they were all good vehicles, no trucks though just passenger cars.  I have driven/riden in toooooo many Jeeps and Durangos..... things fall apart too quickly.... cheap... just my $.02.

I say either the Avy or X-Terra.  I like them both, but the real question is how big of a vehicle does your mom want?  

 

 

I don't like the durango's.  We've got a bunch at work and they're getting rid of them because of the lousy gas mielage.  One of my friends pointed out the 1-1/2" gap on the back between the bumper and body.  Since he did that it's all I can look at.

 

Jeeps are good, I'm guessing she'll want a cherokee or grand cherokee.  They're nice as well.  I guess it's ultimately her decision.

Depends on what you're looking for in an SUV as these are wildly different vehicles:

 

Xterra:  probably reliable, gotta wonder about interior passenger space, short wheelbase could make this a vomit comet for passengers, forget about towing with it.

 

Jeeps:  I'm sorry, but I've known too many people with too many problems with these products - engines, transmissions,  interior components, etc.

 

Durango:  Don't know much about it, except the stupidity of the commercial showing it towing a big ol' Airstream.  That short of a tow vehicle wheelbase towing that much weight and length would be mighty fun in a crosswind or around semis.

 

Av:  No problems with rattles or air/water leaks.  Definitely the best riding of all the vehicles, also the best for towing.  Cons:  probably the most expensive, the apparent size can be too much for some, backing is a PIA due to lack of visability, and accessibility to the front part of the bed is also a pain.

Gas $$$$$ will most likely be a factor.

 

We had Rented a Fullsize truck (F-150 SuperCrew 5.4L if anybody cares) and we went 250 miles on it and had to fill it up 4 times!

 

I'm sure she won't stand for that in a vehicle she's going to 250 miles a day most  of the time.

 

Actually she likes the Wrangler!

 

She wants something big enough to use when we go camping\outdooring. That's what has me thinking X-Terra or Avalanche.

I have to vote for the Av because it's the only "real" choice you have in your option list!!!

 

With your mom being a big Honda fan I'm surprised the new "bigger and more powerful" CRV isn't in the back of her mind.  I saw one when I was shopping for vans and I was pretty impressed.  I think it outclassed the Xterra... plus it was easier to look at!!!

stay away from xterra, they are underpowered (even supercharged models), they cost too much for what u get (a better equipped trailblazer or explorer would cost less), and they are hard to get parts for and the parts cost a lot

 

dodge and jeep are owned by chrysler and chrysler is not very stable, plus reliability of dodges and jeeps is questionable

Well, it is in her mind, but I really don't like them.

 

The X-Terra is the only thing we can agree on, so I seriously believe that'll be it.

 

I'm trying to get her to lean towards the Av so I can have some reasoning for being here at GM-TC! :D

Paco is right abought everything he said about the Xterra...  The same goes for the new Nissan ClubCab...  

 

I was actually very dissapointed when I read the reviews in CS and Motortrend about the new Nissan trucks and SUV's.  And so were the editors of those mags...

 

Seating position/ ride/ power/ back seat room/ ergonomics etc...  were all given low marks.  It's hard to believe it from a car company that for the most part makes very good vehicles.

 

Stay away from Chrysler/Jeep unless you really want to have to use that 7/100 warrranty (because you'll need it)

 

Trailblazers are very pricey, so I think you could get an AV for less money (go figure  ;)  )

 

Avalanches are getting good mpg's too considering their bulk...  better than a Silverado!!!

      Holy s**t - not much of a parts thrower you say? You BLASTED that thing with the parts cannon!  You'd have been probably $1,000 ahead if you had just brought it to a competent shop rather than shotgunning a bunch of parts it clearly didn't need.   Just FYI - oil additives are really, REALLY good at ONE thing ... and that's emptying your wallet. They're ALL useless gimmicks.   If that has the L94 or L99, then #7 is an AFM cylinder. I'd suspect a failed lifter in that case.   If you leaned on wiring, sensors, and/or connectors while changing the oil, you'll have to check all that to be sure pins didn't get pulled out, connectors broken, etc.. Old wire loom that was barely adequate when new is certainly brittle by year 19 - make sure wires aren't chaffed and shorting out somewhere where you might have leaned. or supported yourself on it.   If your a mechanic, why didn't you just find out what you were missing and troubleshoot from there??  TIMED spark, fuel PSI / injector pulse, air, compression.  Can't make ANY money going the parts cannon route.

      LOL! Are you joking?? That wax SUCKS! 100% gimmick made to "look" good.    After just TWO winters I had severe surface rusting in patches over 90% of the frame. Only reason it looks great in the pics is because I SATURATED the frame every single fall with used motor oil for 14 of the 16 years I owned it. Otherwise it would've been sent to the crusher 8 years earlier with the speed it was rusting prior!    I sold that POS 3 years ago. Was a gigantic headache the second it rolled off the showroom floor. Brakes pulsated on the TEST DRIVE. Door trim fell off the 1st week! Interior squeaked and rattled, and the drivetrain clunked after 2k miles. 4x4 switch failed shortly after. Front end - ball joints, struts, hub bearings - all failed between 38k-50k. Engine started burning oil at 50k. Rear and and transmission failed before 100k. Nothing but problems, and frustration with the piss-poor engineering designed to make you give up. Well, it worked! Nothing on that truck was easy to remove ... except the wheels. They haven't figured out how to screw that up yet. Give 'em time ...   I won't make that mistake again.       Different monitors do their test only under conditions specific to that monitor.  you MIGHT find the drive cycle conditions for the monitor that isn't ready on this site: https://lemon-manuals.la/   If it's not there, then it should be on alldata.com for your truck, but it requires a paid subscription.   And you need to know which specific monitor isn't ready.

      from another thread   Update...although the truck sometimes seems to idle weird and the transmission shift a little weird, I've driven about 7,000  miles and no issues.   However, the way GM has handled my rental reimbursement, the situation when my truck quit, and the recall in general has led me to this point...I have driven a GM vehicle for the past 46 years and unless I buy a C3 Corvette, this is the last GM vehicle I will ever own.
