Hey y'all,

I'm new to the group but the posts I've been reading offer a lot of great information so I decided to join the forum. I have a few mods I've done to my 2015 Silverado 1500 LT but next on the list I was thinking about blacking out my rims. Does anybody have any experience with plasti-dip on their factory rims? I've used it before on smaller projects but not so much on larger surface areas with more of a probability of getting dirty, quite often. How well does it hold up and what are some tips and tricks to get nice even coverage and to keep the longevity in the new finish given all of the environmental exposure?

Thanks, Y'all!

I did the rims on my 09 back in 2012 or 13 and had pretty good luck I feel. Best pic I can find right now is from the day I traded it in on my 16.

I picked a nice sunny day and started in the morning as I had quite a bit of taping to do with all the spoke centers. Prep wasnt too bad, just make sure the entire rim was completely clean, I'm sure a can of brake clean was involved. Just as in everything else, dont try and rush it or you'd be wasting your time and not be happy with the result.

They turned out pretty well and I was happy with the results, the finish was still there at trade-in, no gouges or peeling that I recall. I didnt do a clear coat as I was more or less experimenting. I 'think' I put 3 coats on but might of been 2. You'll know when you've found your coverage.

I will say I never got too close with a pressure washer, generally just used a mitt for washing.

I did this on my 2016 and was very happy with the outcome. I applied 3 coats of color and 1 clear coat for a semi-gloss look. It's been 4 years since doing them and  I will say I used a pressure washer and many trips through the car wash during the winter months. By year 3 I had to do a few spot repairs and now I will need to redo them completely in the spring. I will most likely add at least one more coat of color this time to hopefully increase durability. 5ce45d93627b7_Truck2019.jpg.f55ab70f96ae75e1d22834413593ef1c.jpg

Of course I will take it more seriously than this fellow. Yes I am really going to do it. And I want to paint the "GMC" in red. Maybe some model paint for that?
