How would I test a knock sensor? I frequently drive up a hill next to a wall at around 30 kmh, I can hear the engine 'pinging' very noticeably, I installed a canned 87 octane tune & it is better but not gone, running mid grade gas is a bit better again.

I checked for knock retarding via a Bluetooth OBD device with two different apps & it shows zero instances.

Does a knock sensor only activate under really bad pre detonation?

Some devices may not be able to show it, I've run into that issue before. I'm used to using a shop scan tool from a big name or my HP Tuners software to log vehicles.

An easy test for the knock sensor is to smack the block or oil pan with a rubber mallet while it's running. That vibration should be picked up by the sensor.

Knock is built into the calibration when running 87 octane, they all do it but most of the time you can't hear it because the sensor is already removing timing because of the knock.
