Just how handicapped is the 5.3?  I always believed a tune would wake it up a bit, but how much?

All out power numbers at the top of the RPM curve aren't held back much. It's the part throttle to WOT transients where depending on your speed/gear you aren't actually going to 100% throttle body opening even though your commanding it. Im blanking on what these tables are called right now but there's a few of them that will limit TQ/throttle position. Combined with other driveability issues like EGR-effect cam timing, delayed PE enrichment, lazy Driver demand tables, aggressive TC lockup schedules and these trucks feel lazy. The 6.2 shares these burdens too, for the most part, but when you have so much more displacement to begin with it doesn't feel as bad.

My o-60 went from 5.8 to 5.0 with just a tune.

I’ve driven a few 5.3’s loaners, man do they feel slow off the line. A tune would definitely help.

For what’s it worth, I believe the 8 speeds are designed so that they keep power through the shift where as the 6 speed can’t.

keep in mind the 8 speeds are installed in 650hp cars and the shifts are violent on them.
