Wondering if anyone has ever seen this problem.

When I open anything in MS Explorer...ie folder on desktop/Internet Exploder/or just "exploring" the PC.......It takes 30 seconds before anything actually opens.

When I'm waiting, the PC basically freezes. Really bothersome when a pop-up, well...Pops up. I have to wait 30 seconds for it to happen. Same goes for external links.

Basically anytime a new window opens in Explorer, or IE, it takes forever to open, and the PC freezes the whole time.

It's not a connection issue, and I'm not sure it's even related to the individual PC that I'm on because it happens on any PC on the network that I log on to. I'm more inclined to think it has something to do with my profile, as others that use this PC don't have this issue.

It's frustating as he!!, and I can't get into msconfig (obviously I don't work in the network shop).

Anyone have any ideas?

Yea like Jon said you got some bugs on there from ad's.. what sucks is there's not you can really do to prevent them but you can just keep cleaning your system with adaware or spybot and deleting temp internet files.

Ad-Aware, and Spy-Bot find nothing.

I reboot this machine twice per day.

I'm thinking it's a process that starts with my profile. Because if I click on IE as soon as the icon appears (when logging on), it opens immediatly (like it should). But if I wait another 10 seconds, and click on it, it will take 30-45 seconds to open.

Like I said though, I can't get into msconfig to see whats firing off when I log in. Not enough access here at work.

If I ask the PC Lan shop to look at it, they will just delete, and re-install my profile, and I will lose a lot of crap....I was trying to avoid that.

Check out your internet options under the control panel feature. There may be something set too high in there.

Are you running XP and logging on to the PC as a different user?

It's Win2k for proffesionals.

I log in with the same ID everytime.

I have been through all the settings for IE to no avail.

This also happens with Explorer, not just IE. Like when you hit the winkey and E at the same time....So I don't think it's an IE issue.

Thanks for trying guys....Keep it coming.

I just hit the winkey/E and bang it was there....

This is weird that it works for other people on your PC but not for your user ID.

I run XP and it is a very forgiving program... (never any problems). I thought 2000 was supposed to run similar. Do you have all the updates? (Although it doesn't sound like that is the problem).

Yeah, updates are done like clockwork around here. Due to the nature of the place.

I have XP pro at home, and you are right, VERY forgiving. I have tried to crash it, with limited success. 98 would crash if you walked by the room the PC was in. I like XP.

I'm scouring MS knowledge base articles right now, but I don't think that they will be of much use.

It has to be attached to my user ID, because it happens when I log into any other PC on the network here.

if your net is running slow and its not your connection, try deleting your cache and temp files.....cookies and all......when that gets full mine really starts to slow......

2nd piece of advice.....throw out XP, and get 2000 pro..........XP is a POS IMHO

Just kidding about the 2nd peice, but I really do hate XP, it's a PITA to develop in

It has absolutely nothing to do with the connection.

And I'm not a developer, I'm a surfer, so XP does me fine....At home.

Like I said, I am using 2000 proffesional here..Where the problem is.

Believe me, if it were temp files causing this, the problem would have been solved in the first two minutes of the problems onset.

To develop what?

I have XP Pro and I do all my web development on it.... It's no better or worse than 2000 Pro which I have on my old computer...

XP crashes on my a few times now again, but so did 2000. I've got no real complaints (aside from not being able to customize the look of it as much w/o running some third party program.... the green start button just annoys me).

Back on topic....

Hmmmm, I am perplexed now. Can you access your task manager to see how much memory is being used? IE & Explorer are always slow to launch if I am using processor hogging programs like premiere.

I think that XP has issues with compatibility when developing some types of applications, and I think that windows 2000 is a much more stable environment, IE. memory management, and crash recovery. Nothing against XP, it serves it's purpose, but I just like 2000 better. but I have a chip on my shoulder anyway, I've been taught that M$ is E-V-I-L

Since I'm running Window 98SE I'm still stuck in the dark ages! That and I can't get anything but dial up.

When I open the task manager first, and then go to open IE, nothing changes in task manager until the application actually starts. It just sits there.

I also don't see any abnormal processes running. But being a PC that I don't own, and it's on a network, I am not really one to say what a "normal" process is.
