I Got It!!

:D I finally got it!! In mid October, after much research, I ordered my new ride. (The first Chevy I have ever owned) Picked it up late last week. 2004, Chevy 2500HD, Extended Cab, LT, Short Box, 4 X 4, 8.1, Alli, 3.78 Posi, dual batteries, skid plate, trailer package, tube steps (I have a short wife) Carbon Metallic, Rhino Lined, extra set of alloy wheels with studded tires (snow is OK - ICE sucks), Astro Start remote starter, Husky Liners and a Century High C cap. You might say that after 6 or so weeks I would jump at picking it up. Not so.

I went aback and forth about a DuraMax or the 8.1. I have built several very stout Mark IVs (boats) but don't know squat about oil burners. I basically hate diesels because they rattle and stink but love them because of the mileage and ease of hopping up. But because on my low mileage per year, short trips, never tow over 8,000# and the cold here in Alaska I went with the 8.1. Then Chevy put a t**d in the punch bowl and announced the LLY. Thought long and hard about reordering the truck with the LLY - in fact I lost some sleep over it. In the end I picked up the 8.1 and I really love it. After delivery I spent the better part of two days reading the 528 page ops manual and going over the truck with a fine tooth comb.

What may be of more interest to some of you then me telling you about getting a new truck is what I found.

Front Differential is very low on fluid, so low I can't tell what it is. (petro or syn) It has the white breather cap so switching to Syn will be easier. Will get the dealer to do it under the TSB

Rear differential is also very low on fluid.

Transfer case was OK, engine oil, coolent and other fluids - all OK.

High beam indicator will blind you - will do a dealer TSB fix.

Everything else appears to work as advertised.

Thanks to all of the folks who answered my eariler questions and to the topics posted. They are very helpful. I am sure I will continue to love the 8.1 but I still want to see how the LLY does in it's first year.

So far I am very glad I switched from a F**d!!!! :jester:

Congrats. And glad to hear you came to your senses :P:D !!! (don't mind me... my first truck was an f-150  !!!!) Sounds like a sweet rig. (I know, my manual's huge and I studied it !!!)

I dunno, these new diesels are pretty bad. I just might get one in my next big truck. Not cuz I need the towing capability..... because I need 800lbs of torque :D:D !!!!!!!!!! (and the duromax is supposed to be exceptionally quiet for the breed...)

Oh, tell the dealer to fix those fluids. I'd bitch and make them do it while I waited !!!

I've heard others complain about the highbeam indicator, but mine's not bad at all. But then my headlights seem to work different than the norm- all four of mine burn on high... sweet :jester: ...

Enjoy. We eat ours up :D !!

Congrats and best of luck with your new truck! It is always a good idea to inspect your new vehicle after delivery. Just to make sure everything is the way it should be. :fume::thumbs:

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
