Drain Plugs for trans. case, front diff.

This might have been discussed not too long ago, but sometimes I don’t read the forum for days at a time so I might have missed it.

I’m wondering if anyone knows if there are any magnetized plugs for the transfer case and the front differential? Our engine oil drain plugs have that magnetic tip to catch metal particles and fuzz from the motor. It would seem like a good thing for these gear boxes, too.

Now, on the rear differential housing, we have that magnet stuck to the inside to trap some of the gear shavings. But of course it just isn’t feasible to open up either of those two front gear boxes on a regular basis. So I figure a magnetic plug could be beneficial. At any rate, it wouldn’t seem like it could hurt. Anyone know if they’re being made and, if so, who’s selling them?

That's interesting, Dogmeat. Mine is a 4x4 2002 1500. I changed out the fluid in my front diff. last June - no magnetic drainplug.

Since they're almost certainly the same front diff., despite the different model years, they're probably available from the dealers, if no where else.

I'm gonna call Monday morn to check up on that.

The transfer case is made of magnesium - so the plugs can't be made of steel. The plugs must be aluminum to prevent problems from mixing metals. So I don't think there's a plug available for the t-case, at least from the dealer.

Ah yes, the old "dissimiliar metals free-ion exchange" problem. That would present difficulties.

This will have to be looked into further. I'll talk to the dealer sometime next week, and see if they have any info. Report back then.
